were clean passed over = were finished passing over.

children = sons.

Verse 5

before = in the presence of.

their fathers. These words are read in some codices, with four early printed editions, as in Joshua 4:21 .

as = according as.

took up. Four things said of these memorial stones in Joshua 4:8 and Joshua 4:9 , (1) taken up; (2) carried over; (3) laid down; (4) set up.

Verse 9

twelve . Septuagint has "other twelve". There were two twelves.

Verse 12

Reuben. Compare Numbers 32:27 . Compare Joshua 1:12 .

armed = by fives. Compare Joshua 6:7 , Joshua 6:9 . These formed the van.

Verse 13

prepared for war = ready armed.

Verse 14

On that day. Compare Joshua 3:7 .
