George Haydock's Catholic Bible Commentary

Jonathan. David's nephew, (1 Paralipomenon) of the sons of Assem, a Gezonite. This ought, perhaps, to be "Gouni, of the sons," &c., otherwise the name will be lost, contrary to the design of the sacred writer. The verse is not terminated at Jonathan. But he was the son of Sage, (or rather of Semma, as here, ver. 33) an Ararite, 1 Paralipomenon. (Haydock) --- Sage was also the son of Samma, (ver. 11,) as Sage and Age are visibly the same; (Calmet) though of this we may doubt. (Haydock)

Commentary Critical and Explanatory on the Whole Bible - Unabridged

Eliahba the Shaalbonite, of the sons of Jashen, Jonathan,

Eliahba the Shaalbonite, of the sons of Jashen, Jonathan - probably from Shaalbin, or Shaalabbin (a city of foxes), in the tribe of Dan (Joshua 19:42; Judges 1:35; 1 Kings 4:9). Instead of "the sons of Jashen, Jonathan," the parallel list (1 Chronicles 11:34) has "the sons of Hashem the Gizonite," and "Jonathan" stands in another connection. [The Septuagint has huioi Asan.] The disorderly state of the list in this passage Kennicott ('Dissertation,' 1:, pp. 201-203) has proposed to rectify by reading in both places, 'Gouni, of the sons of Hashem; Jonathan, the son of Shamha the Hararite.' This reading rests on the Alexandrine version of the passage in Chronicles. [Bertheau ('Chronik.,' p. 134) thinks that b

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers

(32) Of the sons of Jashen, Jonathan.—The preposition of is not in the Hebrew, and should be omitted. For the rest 1 Chronicles 11:34 reads “the sons of Hashem the Gizonite. In both the words the sons of may be an accidental repetition of the last three letters of the preceding word; if not, they should be read as part of the proper name, Jashen (Chronicles Hashem), or Bnejashen (Chronicles Bnehashem) the Gizonite. Jonathan is then a separate name.
