Devotional for July 17

"for there is nothing covered that shall not be revealed" Matthew 10:26

Revealed - The Greek word is a big one: apokalyphthesetai. It might look intimidating, but if you begin to sound it out, you will discover that it is a word you know apocalypse. In this verse, Jesus is giving instructions to his disciples before he sends them out on their own. He warns them that they cannot expect to be treated any better than he was treated. But He tells them not to be afraid, because everything hidden will be revealed.

Doesn't that sound a little strange? If you were going to give me encouragement, would you tell me not to be afraid because everything hidden will be uncovered? Probably not, unless you meant that I could see the real motives of people. Then I would know what was really in their hearts. I could act according to their real intentions. This is the insight that Jesus had. He saw true intentions. So he was not afraid.

This word literally means "to remove a covering in order to expose something to clear view". How many times have we been surprised by hidden agendas? How much of the time do we spend worrying about the secret motives others might have? Even closer to home, how many secrets control our lives? Jesus tells us that God sees our real intentions and that God has the ability to let others see them as well.

Finally, this is one of three words used to describe the return of Christ. The Apocalypse the time when everything will be revealed. All of our secrets will come to the light. There were years in the past when I tried very hard to hide my secrets. As long as I hid them, they had power over me. They hurt me in the dark. God helped me drag them into the light, and I discovered that the light melted them away.

There is a lot in this word: seeing true motives, the view toward Christ's return, opening our dark secrets to God's light. Maybe that's why John tells us "God is light and in Him is no darkness at all". If we are going to be like Him, we need to be in the light.

In order to be released from the power of secrets and the strength of hidden agendas, you must push them into God's light. They are all going to be uncovered anyway. Why wait? Did you think you could hide them from God?
