1. Any bodily desire which leads to sin (Romans 6:12; Galatians 5:24; Ephesians 2:3 ). Passion is especially used for strong sexual desire (Romans 1:26-27; 1 Corinthians 7:9; 1 Thessalonians 4:5 ). Unregenerate life is characterized by slavery to passions (Ephesians 2:3; Titus 3:3; 1 Peter 1:14 ). Those who belong to Christ have crucified fleshly passions (Galatians 5:24; compare Romans 6:5-14 ). In their frequent appeals to renounce passions, New Testament letters likely echo charges to baptismal candidates (Colossians 3:5; 2 Timothy 2:22; Titus 2:12 ). 2 . KJV twice used the phrase “like passions” (Acts 14:15; James 5:17 ) to mean “shared human nature.” 3. KJV, RSV used passion once (Acts 1:3 ) to mean the suffering which Christ endured from the night of the last supper until His death. NAS, NIV, NRSV replace passion with suffering, which is the usual translation of the underlying Greek (as in Luke 17:15; Luke 24:26 ). REB, TEV read, “death.”
