By a decree of 1920, Our Lady of Loreto was proclaimed patroness of aviators by the Holy See, in reference to the ancient tradition that the Holy House of Nazareth was miraculously carried through the air by angels. The French aviator Georges Guynemer, who engaged in 215 aerial battles, brought down 54 enemy airplanes, was twice wounded, and finally killed in action, was a devout Catholic.
