A system based on an analogy between the Christian and Jewish dispensations, founded in the 16th century by Erastus, a follower of Zwingli, whose real name was Thomas Liebr. The term is used to denote an undue subservience of the Church to the State; the supremacy of civilrulers in matters of religion, as in Great Britain and Germany.
