Confessor, Bishop of Seville, born Carthage, c.534;died Seville, Spain, 601. He was the brother of Saint Isidore who succeeded him, and Saint Fulgentius of Carthagena. He became a Benedictine monk, and, in 579, Bishop of Seville. He founded a noted School at Seville, and was distinguished for his opposition to Arianism, which led to his temporary exile. Spain is greatly indebted to Leander's efforts for her later religious unity, fervent faith, and broad culture. Emblem: a pen. Feast, February 27,.
