It does not appear to have been in use before the deluge; at least Moses says nothing of it; he speaks only of the metals brass and iron, Genesis 4:22 . But in Abraham's time it was become common, and traffic was carried on with it, Genesis 23:2; Genesis 23:15 . Yet it was not then coined, but was only in bars or ingots; and in commerce was always weighed.
