Now it came to pass

when the judges

haš·šō·p̄ə·ṭîm,

הַשֹּׁפְטִ֔ים

that there was

a certain man

of Bethlehem

and his wife

וְאִשְׁתּ֖וֹ

And the name

of the man [was]

אֱ‍ֽלִימֶ֡לֶךְ

and the name

and the name

wə·ḵil·yō·wn

’ep̄·rā·ṯîm,

of Bethlehem

And they came

way·yā·ḇō·’ū

into the country

and continued

וַיִּֽהְיוּ־

’ĕ·lî·me·leḵ

אֱלִימֶ֖לֶךְ

and she was left

wat·tiš·šā·’êr

וַתִּשָּׁאֵ֥ר

And they took

וַיִּשְׂא֣וּ

of the women of Moab

mō·’ă·ḇî·yō·wṯ,

מֹֽאֲבִיּ֔וֹת

of the one [was]

and the name

of the other

and they dwelled

way·yê·šə·ḇū

וַיֵּ֥שְׁבוּ

way·yā·mū·ṯū

וַיָּמ֥וּתוּ

wə·ḵil·yō·wn;

and was left

wat·tiš·šā·’êr

וַתִּשָּׁאֵר֙

and the women

and her husband

ū·mê·’î·šāh.

וּמֵאִישָֽׁהּ׃

Then she arose

that with her daughters-in-law

wə·ḵal·lō·ṯe·hā,

וְכַלֹּתֶ֔יהָ

she might return

from the land

she had heard

and Why she went forth

ham·mā·qō·wm

daughters-in-law

ḵal·lō·ṯe·hā

and they went

wat·tê·laḵ·nāh

וַתֵּלַ֣כְנָה

daughters-in-law

ḵal·lō·ṯe·hā,

of her mother

you have dealt

wə·‘im·mā·ḏî.

וְעִמָּדִֽי׃

and you that you may find

in the house

of her husband

Then she kissed

and they lifted up

wat·tiś·śe·nāh

וַתִּשֶּׂ֥אנָה

wat·tiḇ·ke·nāh.

וַתִּבְכֶּֽינָה׃

And they said

wat·tō·mar·nāh-

וַתֹּאמַ֖רְנָה־

we will return

with you to your people

me? there yet

[any more] sons

that they may be

la·’ă·nā·šîm.

לַאֲנָשִֽׁים׃

[your way] I am too old

I should say

אָמַ֙רְתִּי֙

I should have

הַלַּ֙יְלָה֙

[if] a husband

and should also

Would you stay

tə·śab·bê·rə·nāh,

תְּשַׂבֵּ֗רְנָה

they were grown

would you stay

tê·‘ā·ḡê·nāh,

תֵּֽעָגֵ֔נָה

for it is harder

And they lifted up

wat·tiś·śe·nāh

וַתִּשֶּׂ֣נָה

wat·tiḇ·ke·nāh

וַתִּבְכֶּ֖ינָה

mother-in-law

la·ḥă·mō·w·ṯāh,

לַחֲמוֹתָ֔הּ

And she said

is gone back

your sister-in-law

יְבִמְתֵּ֔ךְ

and unto her

’ĕ·lō·he·hā;

your sister-in-law

יְבִמְתֵּֽךְ׃

תִּפְגְּעִי־

lə·‘ā·zə·ḇêḵ

from following

mê·’a·ḥă·rā·yiḵ;

מֵאַחֲרָ֑יִךְ

I will lodge

[shall be] my people

and your God

wê·lō·ha·yiḵ

וֵאלֹהַ֖יִךְ

will I be buried

[if ought] death

when she saw

was steadfastly minded

miṯ·’am·me·ṣeṯ

מִתְאַמֶּ֥צֶת

then she left

וַתֶּחְדַּ֖ל

wat·tê·laḵ·nāh

וַתֵּלַ֣כְנָה

to Bethlehem

when it came to pass

kə·ḇō·’ā·nāh

כְּבֹאָ֙נָה֙

to Bethlehem

and was moved

and they said

wat·tō·mar·nāh

וַתֹּאמַ֖רְנָה

And she said

תִּקְרֶ֥אנָה

has dealt very bitterly

for the Almighty

has dealt very bitterly

has brought me home again

הֱשִׁיבַ֣נִי

seeing the LORD

has testified

and the Almighty

has afflicted

and the Ruth

Moabitess her

ham·mō·w·’ă·ḇî·yāh

הַמּוֹאֲבִיָּ֤ה

daughter-in-law

that returned

from the land

to Bethlehem

at the beginning

בִּתְחִלַּ֖ת
