stay beside or near, stand by, οὐδέ τις αὐτῷ Ἀργείων παρέμεινε Il. 11.402, cf. 15.400; παράμεινον τὸν βίον ἡμῖν Ar. Pax 1108 (hex.), cf. Pl. Ap. 39e, al.; of slaves, remain, stay, opp. δραπετεύω, ἀποδιδράσκω, Id. Men. 97d, X. Oec. 3.4; in Law, of slaves whose manumission was deferred, SIG 1208 (Thespiae, ii B. C.), etc.: hence Παρμένων, Trusty, as a slave's name, Men. Sam. 302, etc. II abs., stand one's ground, stand fast, Il. 13.151, cf. Hdt. 1.82, 6.14, Ar. Pl. 440, etc.; more fully, μάχαις τλάμονι ψυχᾷ π. Pi. παραμένω; future παραμένω; 1 aorist participle παραμείνας; from Homer down; to remain beside, continue always near (cf. παρά, IV. 1): Hebrews 7:23; opposed to ἀπεληλυθεναι, James 1:25 (and continues to do so, not departing till all stains are washed away, cf. James 1:24); with one, πρός τινα, 1 Corinthians 16:6; τίνι (as often in Greek authors), to survive, remain alive (Herodotus 1, 30), Philippians 1:25 L T Tr WH (where Lightfoot: "παραμένω is relative, while μένω is absolute." πειράω, usually found in mid. or pass, with act. meaning ";try,"; ";attempt,"; is confined to Acts 26:21 in NT, but can be freely illustrated from the Κοινή, e.g. PSI VI. 604.16 (iii/B.C.) πειράσομαι ἀνέγκλητος εἶναι, P Vat A.17 (B.C. 168) (= UPZ i. P. 303) ἀλλὰ πᾶς τις πειρᾶται, ὁπηνίκ᾽ ἂν ἐκ κινδὑνων διασωθῆι, ταχέως παραγίνεσθαι, ";but everyone tries, whenever he has been delivered out of dangers, to come home quickly,"; P Par 49.7 (B.C. 161) (= UPZ i. p. 308) πεπείραμαι (cf. 1Ki. 17:39 [MT 1 Samuel 17:39]) . . . εἰς πᾶν τό σοι χρήσιμον ἐμαυτὸν ἐπιδιδόναι, P Fay 124.7 (ii/A.D.) νῦν οὖν πάλειν ἐπιράθην (cf. 1 Maccabees 12:10) γράφιν σ [ο ]ι, ";so now again I attempt to write to you,"; PSI IV. 299.18 (iii/A.D.) αὐτὸς δὲ πειρῶμαι, ἐπὰν πλοίου εὐπορηθῶ, καταλαβεῖν ὑμᾶς, and P Oxy I. 71i. 10 (A.D. 303) ἐπειράθη μέν τινα κακουργίαν ἐπὶ ἀποστερέσι τῇ ἡμετέρᾳ ποιήσασθαι διὰ τὸ ἀγράμματόν με εἶναι, ";he attempted, owing to my being illiterate, to commit a fraud to my detriment"; (Edd.).
