ἀντί-θεσις, εως, ἡ,
1. opposition, Pl. Sph. 257e, 258b; ἀντίθεσιν ἔχειν πρός τι correspond to.., Arist. HA 503a25; resistance, AP 12.200 (Strat.).
2. in Logic, opposition of propositions, in pl., Arist. Int. 19b20, Top. 113b15, Metaph. 1054a23. substitution of the contradictory, as 'not-man' for 'man', ἡ σὺν -θέσει ἀντιστροφή, conversion by negation, e.g. 'man is an animal ∴ what is not an animal cannot be a man', Anon. in SE 15.23, al.
3. Rhet., antithesis, Isoc. 12.2, Arist. Rh. 1410a22; in forensic oratory, counter-proposition, Hermog. Id. 1.4, al.

The verbal adj. is used in a report of ii/B.C. regarding the peculations of certain officials, P Tebt I. 24.63, one of the charges against them being that they had ";wormed themselves"; (αὑτοὺς ἐνειληκότων) into certain positions ἀντιθέταις τῆς καθ᾽ ἑαυτοὺς ἀσχολία (l.—ας), ";inconsistent with their own work"; (Edd.).
