Vocabulary of the Greek NT

For ἔθος = ";usage,"; ";custom,"; as in the Lukan writings, cf. P Oxy II. 370 (late i/A.D.) ἃς (sc. δραχμὰς) καὶ διαγράψομεν ἐπὶ τὴν δημοσίαν τράπεζαν ταῖς ὡρισμέναις προθεσμίαις κατὰ τὸ ἔθος, and similarly P Ryl II. 78.17 (A.D. 157), P Grenf I. 48.15 (A.D. 191), P Lond II. 171 b.19 (iii/A.D.) (= II. p. 176). Other prepositional phrases are ἐν ἔθει (e.g. P Oxy III. 471.78 (ii/A.D.) ἅπαξ γὰρ ἐν ἔθει τῆς α [ἰσ ]χύνης γενόμενον, ";for when once accustomed to his shame";), and ἐξ ἔθους (e.g. P Oxy VI. 900.7 (A.D. 322) τοὺς ἐξ ἔθους ταύτην τὴν χώραν ἀποπληροῦντας, ";those who customarily fill this post";). See also P Fay 125.5 (ii/A.D.) ὡς ἔθος ἐστί σοι, ";as is your custom,"; P Ryl II. 238.6 (A.D. 262) ὅσα ἔθος ἔχουσι λαμβάνειν, ";whatever they are accustomed to receive,"; and the other exx. in Deissmann BS p. 251 f. From the inscrr. we may cite Syll 349.11 κατὰ τὸ τῶν προγόνων ἔθος, and Magn 100 b..12 (ii/B.C.) κατὰ τὸ πά [τριον ἔθος with reference to a day when children are freed from lessons and slaves from work. For the narrower sense of ";law,"; ";rite,"; Thieme (p. 22) refers to such a passage as Magn 179.10 (ii/A.D.) an inscr. in honour of one—δόντα τὰ ἐξ ἔθους καὶ ὡρισμένα ὑπὲρ τῆς καύσεως τῆς βαίτης (δηνάρια) χ ̄ : cf. .19 τὸ ἐξ ἔθους ἐπὶ ἡμέρᾳ διδόμενον ἔλαιον.

For the adj. ἔβιμος, see BGU II. 581.5 (A.D. 133) ὀμνύω τὸν ἔθιμον Ῥωμαίων ὅρκον, P Oxy IV. 729.7 (lease of a vineyard—A.D. 137) τὴν δ ̣ὲ ἀν [α ]βολὴν ποιήσονται ἀπὸ τῶν ἐθίμων ἀναβολῶν.
