εὐθύνω is used of a magistrate who calls others to account : hence in the Pass. οἱ εὐθυνόμενοι = ";the culprits,"; e.g. P Tor I. 1iii. 10 (B.C. 117) μεταπεμψάμενον τοὺς εὐθυνομένους ἐπισκέψασθαι περὶ τούτων, P Tebt I. 14.4 (B.C. 114) εὐθυνομένωι δὲ φόνωι, ";arraigned for murder"; (where note the dat. for the usual gen. criminis), ib. 53.22 (B.C. 110) οἱ εὐθυνόμενοι ἀναζητηθ ̣[έ ]ντες, ";the culprits having been searched for."; The metaph. application of the ordinary meaning ";guide straight"; may be illustrated from Vett. Val. p. 340.9 ἀγαπητὸν γὰρ εἰ. . . ἄρξαιτό τις ἑρμηνεύειν μὴ διὰ πλήθους λόγων, ἀλλὰ διὰ βραχέων εἰς ἀλήθειαν εὐθυνόντων.
