1. discretion, caution, Thgn. l.c., Agathol.c., etc.; ἐσῴζετ' ἂν τὴν -ειαν S. El. 994; personified in E. Ph. 782; ἡ εὐ. σῴζει πάντα Ar. Av. 376; εὐλάβειαν ἔχειν μή.., = εὐλαβεῖσθαι μή.., Pl. Prt. 321a; so εὐ. αὕτη.. τὸ μὴ νέους.. γεύεσθαι caution to preuent their tasting, Id. R. 539b; εὐλαβείας οὐ μικρᾶς δεῖται, εὐ. ἐστὶ πολλῆς, D. 19.262, Arist. In P Par 26.21 (B.C. 163–2) (= Selections, p. 15) the Twins describe the Serapeum officials as—οὐδεμίαν εὐλάβειαν προορωμένων, ";paying no regard to religious scruple,"; where εὐλάβειαν has the same religious connotation as in Proverbs 28:14. (MGr = ";piety.";) For the use of the subst. as a title of respect, like our ";Your reverence,"; see P Flor I. 73.7 (A.D. 505) ὁμολογῶ ἑκουσι ̣ως καὶ αὐθαιρέτως μεμισθῶσθαι παρὰ τῆς σῆς εὐλαβε [ία ]ς ̣ κτλ.
