T. only in the imperative: θάρσει, Luke 8:48 R G; Matthew 9:2, 22; Mark 10:49; Acts 23:11 (the Sept. for תִּירָא אַל, Genesis 35:17, etc.); θαρσεῖτε, Matthew 14:27; Mark 6:50; John 16:33 (the Sept. for אַל־תּירְאוּ, Exodus 14:13; Joel 2:22, etc.). θαρσέω, which in the NT is found only in the imper., may be illustrated by P Par 51.10 (B.C. 160) (= Selections, p. 19) ὄμμα. . ψυχῆς θάρσ [ει, ";eye . . of my soul, take courage."; See also P Petr II. 1.8 (iii/B.C.) θαρσήσας ὠικονόμησα, P Lond 354.9 (c. B.C. 10) (= II. p. 164) ἐθάρσησαν ἐπιδόντες, BGU IV. 1080.14 (iii/A.D. ?) περὶ τούτου θαρσῶν ἀμέλι (l. ἀμέλει). For the form θαρσύνω, cf. Aristeas 272 θαρσύνας δὲ τοῦτον ἕτερον ἐπηρώτα κτλ., ";he spoke encouragingly to him, and asked another"; etc. (Thackeray).
