to cut short the hair, shear: a sheep, Acts 8:32 (Isa, l.c.). Mid., to have one's hair cut off, be shorn: absol., 1 Corinthians 11:6; τ -. κεφαλήν , Acts 18:18.†

κείρω is used of shearing sheep in PSI IV. 368.45 (B.C. 250–49) ἐκάρη πρόβατα ρ ̄ι ̄ε ̄, cf. .61 ἔκειρε ζ ̄. For the derived meaning ";ravage"; (cf. Lat. tondeo and our ";fleece";) see OGIS 765.10 (iii/B.C.) κείρο [ντ ]ες τ [ ] τεμένη, and the corresponding use of the subst. = ";plur der,"; ";theft,"; in P Lond 403.12 (A.D. 346) (=11. p. 276) [ν τ ]ῶν προβάτων κο ̣υ ̣ρὰν καὶ ἀπελασίαν. A new literary citation is supplied by Herondas iii. 40 τὴν μάμμην. . κείρει, ";he fleeces his grandmother.";
