κράββατος (L T Tr WH κράβαττος; the Sinaiticus manuscript κραβακτος (except in Acts 5:15; cf. KC. Nov. Test. ad fid. Vat. praef., p. 81f; Tdf. Proleg., p. 80)), κραββατου, ὁ (Latingrabatas), a pallet, camp bed (a rather mean bed, holding only one person, called by the Greeks σκίμπους, σκιμποδιον): Mark 2:4, 9, 11; Mark 6:55; John 5:8-12 (in 12 T WH omit; Tr brackets the clause); Acts 5:15; Acts 9:33. κράββατος, the poor man’s bed or mattress, and therefore better suited to the narrative in Mark 2:4 than κλίνη which Mt (9:2 ) and Lk (5:18 ) substitute. In Acts 5:15 κράββατος is distinguished from κλινάριον : cf. 9.33 where Lk may have kept the original word of his informant. The word is late (Lob. Phryn. p. 62 σκίμπους λέγε, ἀλλὰ μὴ κράββατος), and is probably rightly traced to Macedonian origin (Sturzius Dial. Mac. p. 175 f.). With Mark 2:12 Norden (Ant. Kunstprosa, ii. p. 532 n..1) contrasts Lucian Philops. 16 ἀράμενος τὸν σκίμποδα, ἐφ᾽ οὗ ἐκεκόμιστο, ᾤχετο ἐς τὸν ἀγρὸν ἀπιών. The spelling varies, but the form given above is found in the best NT MSS. (WSchm p. 56), though א on 10 out of 11 occurrences prefers κράβακτος, for which we can now cite P Tebt II. 406.19 (inventory of property—c. A.D. 266) κράβακτος ξύλινος τέλειος, ";a wooden bedstead in good order,"; P Gen I. 68.10 (A.D. 382) ἑρματικὼν χράβακτων (l. ἑρματικὸν κράβακτον) : see also the late P Grenf II. 111.32 (v/vi A.D.) (= Chrest. I. 135) κραβάκ ̣τ ̣(ιον), where the editors note that κράββατος is used of a bier by Cedrenus, Justinian. an. 31 τοὺς κ. τῶν ἐκκλησιῶν (Migne, P.G. cxxi. 736 c), and compare κραβατταρία in the same sense in Chron. Paschal. an. 605 (ib. xcii. 976 a), al. Κράββατος is found in an inventory of Trajan’s reign, P Lend 191.16 (A.D. 103–117) (= II. p. 265) : cf. Epict. i. 24. 14 and κραββάτιον in ib. iii. 22. 74. In an ostracon, probably Ptolemaic, published in Mél. Nicole p. 184 we find κράβατος as in Mark 2:4 B* : cf. Lat. grabattus, showing that in the West the form with one β prevailed. WSchm p. 56 cites κραβάτριος from CIG II. 2114d.1 in the sense of ἀρχικοιτω [ε ]ίτης (ib. add. 2132d.6 : cf. Acts 12:20). In the German edition of his Prolegomena (Einleitung, p. 60) Moulton has a note on the significance of the orthographical peculiarities of the NT uncials in connexion with such a word as κράββατος in helping to fix the provenance of the MSS. : the note is reproduced in Lake’s Introduction to his edition of the Cod. Sinaiticus, p. xi.Add that Codex Washington (W) regularly spells the word κράβαττον. According to Thumb (Indog. Forsch. ii. p. 85) κρεββάτι is the normal form in MGr.
