Vocabulary of the Greek NT

For κρίνω c. inf., ";decide to . .,"; as in Acts 20:16, 1 Corinthians 2:2, Titus 3:12, see P Par 26.37 (B.C. 163–2) (= Selections, p. 17) οὐκ ἐκρίναμεν καταχωρίσαι (cf. 1 Chronicles 27:24), ";we have decided not to record,"; and cf. P Tebt I. 55.4 (late ii/B.C.) ἔκρινα γράψαι, P Lond 897.11 (A.D. 84) (= III. p. 207) κέκρικα (";I have decided once and for all"; : cf. John 19:22 γέγραφα) γὰρ νὴ τοὺς θεοὺς ἐν Ἀλεξανδρείᾳ ἐπιμένειν, P Oxy XII. 1492.8 (iii/iv A.D.) εἰ οὖν ἔκρεινας κατὰ τὸ π ̣α ̣λ ̣[αιὸν ] ἔθος δοῦναι τὴν α ̣̀ρ [ο ]υ ̣ραν τῷ τόπῳ, ";if then you have decided in accordance with ancient custom to give the arura to the place"; (Edd.). [LS8 quote Menander Φιλ. 5 ζῆν μεθ᾽ ὧν κρίνῃ τις (sc. ζῆν), but this is rather for ζῆν μετ᾽ ἐκείνων οὓς κρίνῃ τις (κρίνω c. acc. ";choose"; or ";prefer,"; a classical use).] The verb is also used as a kind of term, techn. for the response of an oracle, e.g. P Fay 138.1 (i/ii A.D.) Κύριοι Διόσκουροι, ἦ κρείνεται αὐτὸν ἀπελθεῖν ἰς πόλειν; ";O lords Dioscuri, is it fated for him to depart to the city?"; Cf. the use of the compound in P Tebt II. 284.2 (i/B.C.) ἐπικέκριταί μοι μὴ καταβῆναι ἕως τῆς κ ̄ε ̄, ";it has been decided for me (by the local oracle) that I should not go down till the 25th"; (Edd.) The forensic sense is very common, e.g. P Petr III. 26.4 (iii/B.C.) ἐὰν δέ τις παρὰ ταῦτα κρίνηι ἤ κριθῆι ἄκυρα ἔστω, ";and if any one judge or be judged contrary to these regulations, the decisions shall be invalid,"; id. I. 16 (2).11 (B.C. 230) κριθήσομαι ἐπ᾽ Ἀσκληπιάδου, ";I shall submit to the judgement of A."; P Oxy I. 37ii. 8 (A.D. 49) (= Selections, p. 51) κατὰ τὰ ὑπὸ τοῦ κυρίου ἡγεμόνος κριθέντα, ";in accordance with the judgement of our lord the Prefect,"; ib. 38.16 (A.D. 49–50) (= Selections, p. 53) ἐνμεῖναι τοῖς κεκριμένοις, ";to comply with the judgement"; (Edd.)—a legal formula, P Ryl II. 119.3 (A.D. 54–67) τυγχάνωι κεκριμένος ὑπὸ τοῦ κρατίστου ἡγεμόνος, ";I happen to have had a case decided by his highness the Prefect,"; and ib. 75.8 (judicial proceedings—late ii/A.D.) ἤδη μέντοι τύπος ἐστὶν καθ᾽ ὃν ἔκρεινα πολλάκις καὶ τοῦτο δίκαιον εἶναί μοι φαίνεται, ";only there is a principle according to which I have often judged and which seems to me fair"; (Edd.). Deissmann (LAE p. 118) has shown that help is given to the difficult phrase κρίνω τὸ δίκαιον in Luke 12:57 by a prayer for vengeance addressed to Demeter on a leaden tablet found at Amorgos, BCH xxv. (1901) p. 416 ἐπάκουσον, θεά, καὶ κρῖναι τὸ δίκαιον, ";prononce la juste sentence"; (Ed.). A good parallel to 1 Corinthians 6:2 occurs in Syll 850.8 (B.C. 173–2) κριθέντω ἐν ἄνδροις τρίοις οὓς συνείλοντο. On the weakened use of κρίνω in Acts 15:19 (cf. 13:48, 16:15, 26:8 ), where it is practically = νομίζω, see Hort Christian Ecclesia, p. 80.
