1. reject on scrutiny or trial, reject a candidate from want of qualification, Hdt. 6.130, Lys. 13.10, Archipp. 14: — Pass., λαχὼν ἀπεδοκιμάσθη ἄρχειν Din. 2.10, cf. D. 25.30.
2. generally, reject as unworthy or unfit, πασσόφους ἄνδρας Pl. Tht. 181b; ἵππον X. Eq.Mag. 1.13; νόμους Id. Mem. 4.4.14; ἀργύριον Thphr. Char. 4.11; τὴν [τοῦ αὐλοῦ] χρῆσιν ἐκ τῶν νέων Arist. (Hadrian) παραζώ [ν ]ιον γὰρ πρὸς τὸ παρὸν γνήσιον οὐχ εὑρε ̣θ ̣η, ἀλλ᾽ οὐδ ̣ὲ ἐδικαίωσα ἀγοράσαι ἀποδοκιμασθῆναι δυνάμενον, ";a girdle-dagger suitable for the present purpose has not been found, and I have not thought it right to buy one that might be rejected."; On the use in 1 Peter 2:7 of the LXX ἀποδοκιμάζω instead of ἐξουθενέω as in Acts 4:11 for the Heb מָאַם in MT Psalms 118:22, as indicating a progress on Peter’s part in Greek ways and speech, see Ramsay Pauline Studies, p. 254 f.
