Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

גֻּלְגֹּלֶת f., the skull, so called from its round form (root גָּלַל), 2 Kings 9:35. This word is also used where the single individuals of a nation are numbered; as in. Lat. caput, Germ. Kopf [Engl. heads]; Exodus 16:16, עֹמֶר לַגֻּלְגֹּלֶת “an omer apiece;” Numbers 1:2, כָּל־זָכָר לְגֻלְגְּלֹתָם “all the males according to their heads,” i.e. man by man, verses 18, 20, 22 compare רֹאשׁ Judges 5:30. (In the Rabb. כֶּסֶף הַגֻּלְגֹּלֶת signifies a poll-tax; Syr. ܓܓܳܘܽܠܬܐܳ id. by casting away Lamed of the first syllable; Arabic جَلَجَةُ, where the second Lamed is cast away; comp. Γολγοθᾶ Matth. 27:33.)
