הָמַם fut. יָהֹם i.q. הוּם pr. to put in motion, in Bewegung feßen; hence
(1) to impel, to drive. Isaiah 28:28, הָמַם גִּלְגַּל עֶגְלָתוֹ “he drives the wheels of his threshing wain.” (Comp. Arab. حَمَّ to urge on a beast.)
(2) to disturb, to put in commotion, to put to flight, e.g. when used of God, his enemies, Exodus 14:24, 23:27 Joshua 10:10. Psalms 144:6, שְׁלַח חִצֶּיךָ וּתְהֻמֵּם “send forth thine arrows, and put them (the enemies) to flight.” Psalms 18:15. 2 Chronicles 15:6, אֱלֹהִים הֲמָמָם בְּכָל־צָרָה “God disturbed them with every misery.” Hence
(3) to destroy utterly, to make extinct, Deuteronomy 2:15; Esther 9:24 (where it is joined with אִבֵּד). Jeremiah 51:34 (with אָכַל).
