Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

נֶגֶב m. the south, the southern quarter, Exodus 27:9; Isaiah 21:1, etc. גְּבוּל נֶגֶב the southern boundary, Joshua 15:4. In acc. adv. נֶגֶב כִּנֲּרוֹת to the south of the lake Cinneroth. Joshua 11:2. Hence אֶרֶץ הַנֶּגֶב Joshua 15:19, and simply נֶגֶב Psalms 126:4, south country; specially

(a) the southern district of Palestine, Genesis 13:3, 20:1 24:62 Deuteronomy 34:3; Joshua 10:40.

(b) Egypt, Isaiah 30:6; Daniel 11:5, seq.-With ־ָה parag. נֶגְבָּה southward, Exodus 40:24 followed by לְ Joshua 17:9, 10 Joshua 17:10, נֶגְבָּה לְאֶפְרַיִם “southward (it was) Ephraim’s;” and מִן Joshua 18:14, נֶגְבָּה מִן הָהָר “southward of the mountain.” Also with pref. בַּנֶּגְבָּה Joshua 15:21, “in (the region lying) towards the south,” and לַנֶּגְבָּה 1 Chronicles 26:17.
