שֵׁ֫מַע noun [masculine] hearing, report (on from compare Lag BN 143); — ׳שׁ absolute Isaiah 23:5; construct Isaiah 23:5 +; suffix שִׁמְעִי Isaiah 66:19 etc.; — report, usually with Genitive object: accusative with שְׁמַע Genesis 29:13 (J) the tidings about Jacob, Isaiah 23:5 #NAME? שֵׁמַע m. with suff. שִׁמְעִי
(1) hearing, Job 42:5 (opp. to sight). Psalms 18:45, לְשֵׁמַע אֹזֶן יִשָּֽׁמְעוּ לִי “at the hearing of the ear they shall render obedience,” as soon as they hear my mandate.
(2) fame, rumour, report שֵׁמַע רַע an evil report, Exodus 23:1. Followed by a gen. of that concerning which the report is; שֵׁמַע שְׁלֹמֹה the fame of Solomon, 1 Kings 10:1 שֵׁמַע צֹר the report of Tyre (as destroyed), Isaiah 23:5. שֵׁמַע יַעֲקֹב the report of the coming of Jacob, Genesis 29:13; Isaiah 66:19; Hosea 7:12, כְּשֵׁמַע לַעֲדָתָם “as the report (came) to their congregation.”
(3) singing, music, Psalms 150:5, צִלְצְלֵי שֵׁמַע “loud cymbals.”
