slight, worthless, of no account, both of persons and things in various shades of meaning (v. LS, s.v.), in NT, as freq. in cl., always with distinct moral reference (v. Ellic., Past. Epp., 203; Hort, Ja., 85; Tr., Syn., LXXxiv), worthless, bad: John 3:20, Titus 2:8, James 3:16; opp. to ἀγαθός (q.v.), John 5:29, Romans 9:11, 2 Corinthians 5:10.†

";flight"; (Mat. 24:20) : P Tebt I. 48.24 (c.B.C. 113) ῥίψαντα τὸ ἱμάτιον εἰς φυγὴν ὁρμῆσαι, ";throwing away his garment took to flight,"; Gnomon 36 (c. A.D. 150) (= BGU V. p. 20) αὐθ <έι ̣ε ̣ρ >ρετον (l. αὐθαίρετον) φυγὴν ἑλομένων, ";having taken to flight of their own accord,"; BGU III. 909.14 (A.D. 359) τῶν ἀπὸ τῆς κώμης φυγὴ (ν) π ̣ο ̣η ̣σαμένων, and P Oxy XVI. 1876.5 (c. A.D. 480) διὰ τῆς φυγῆς περιγράφειν τὸ χρέος ἐσπούδασαν, ";they attempted by flight to evade payment of the debt"; (Edd.).

For a weaker sense cf. ib. VIII. 1121.26 (A.D. 295) ἐμοῦ ἤδη τὴν πρ [ὸς τὸν μ ]ίζονα φυγὴν ποιουμένη <ς >, ";since I a m already having recourse to the official"; (Ed.), in connexion with a petition.
