Jesus looked straight at them and answered, "This is impossible for human beings, but for God everything is possible."

The crowds walking in front of Jesus and those walking behind began to shout, "Praise to David's Son! God bless him who comes in the name of the Lord! Praise be to God!"

and said to them, "It is written in the Scriptures that God said, ‘My Temple will be called a house of prayer.' But you are making it a hideout for thieves!"

Where did John's right to baptize come from: was it from God or from human beings?" They started to argue among themselves, "What shall we say? If we answer, ‘From God,' he will say to us, ‘Why, then, did you not believe John?'

Which one of the two did what his father wanted?" "The older one," they answered. So Jesus said to them, "I tell you: the tax collectors and the prostitutes are going into the Kingdom of God ahead of you.

"And so I tell you," added Jesus, "the Kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people who will produce the proper fruits."

"The Emperor's," they answered. So Jesus said to them, "Well, then, pay to the Emperor what belongs to the Emperor, and pay to God what belongs to God."

Now, as for the dead rising to life: haven't you ever read what God has told you? He said,

‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.' He is the God of the living, not of the dead."

Jesus answered, "‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.'

and when he swears by the Temple, he is swearing by it and by God, who lives there;

"How terrible for you, teachers of the Law and Pharisees! You hypocrites! You give to God one tenth even of the seasoning herbs, such as mint, dill, and cumin, but you neglect to obey the really important teachings of the Law, such as justice and mercy and honesty. These you should practice, without neglecting the others.

"Jerusalem, Jerusalem! You kill the prophets and stone the messengers God has sent you! How many times I wanted to put my arms around all your people, just as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you would not let me!

From now on, I tell you, you will never see me again until you say, ‘God bless him who comes in the name of the Lord.'"

Pray to God that you will not have to run away during the winter or on a Sabbath!

But God has already reduced the number of days; had he not done so, nobody would survive. For the sake of his chosen people, however, God will reduce the days.

Then he took a cup, gave thanks to God, and gave it to them. "Drink it, all of you," he said;

Then Jesus said to them, "This very night all of you will run away and leave me, for the scripture says, ‘God will kill the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.'

But Jesus kept quiet. Again the High Priest spoke to him, "In the name of the living God I now put you under oath: tell us if you are the Messiah, the Son of God."

Then Peter said, "I swear that I am telling the truth! May God punish me if I am not! I do not know that man!" Just then a rooster crowed,
