But they said to Joshua, "We are your servants." Then Joshua said to them, "Who are you? Where do you come from?"

Our bread was warm when we took it along with what we needed from our houses on the day we left to come to you. But now look, it is dry and broken.

But three days after they had made an agreement with them, they heard that they were neighbors who lived in their land.

But the people of Israel did not kill them because the leaders of the people had made a promise to them by the Lord the God of Israel. All the people complained against the leaders.

But on that day Joshua made them cut wood and bring water for the people of Israel and for the altar of the Lord, at whatever place He chooses. That was to be their work to this day.

But do not stay there yourselves. Go after those who hate you. Follow after them and fight. Do not let them go into their cities. For the Lord your God has given them into your hand."

Horam king of Gezer came to help Lachish. But Joshua won the battle against him and his people. He left no one alive.

But Israel did not burn any cities that stood on their hills, except Hazor, which Joshua burned.

The sons of Israel took for themselves all the riches of these cities and the cattle. But they killed every man with the sword until they had destroyed them. They left no one who breathed.

For the Lord made their hearts hard to meet Israel in battle, so Israel might destroy all of them. They would not be shown pity but would be destroyed, just as the Lord had told Moses.

But the people of Israel did not drive out the Geshurites or the Maacathites. For Geshur and Maacath live among Israel to this day.

But Moses did not give any land to the family of Levi. The Lord, the God of Israel, is their share, as He had told them.

For Moses had given land to the two families and the half-family group east of the Jordan. But he did not give land to the Levites among them.

My brothers who went up with me made the heart of the people weak with fear. But I followed the Lord my God with all my heart.

But the sons of Judah could not drive out the Jebusites, the people of Jerusalem. So the Jebusites live with the people of Judah at Jerusalem to this day.

But they did not drive out the Canaanites who lived in Gezer. So the Canaanites live among Ephraim to this day. But they have been made to work for the people of Ephraim.

But Zelophehad, the son of Hepher, son of Gilead, son of Machir, son of Manasseh, had no sons, only daughters. The names of his daughters were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.

The land of Tappuah belonged to Manasseh. But the town of Tappuah on the side of Manasseh's land belonged to the sons of Ephraim.

But the sons of Manasseh could not take these cities for their own because the Canaanites would not leave that land.

When the people of Israel became strong, they made the Canaanites work for them. But they did not drive all of them out.
