they said this only to ensnare him, that they might have some accusation against him. but Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground.

Jesus then having reassumed his discourse, said to them, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me, shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

Jesus delivered this discourse in the treasury, when he taught in the temple: and no man laid hands on him, for his hour was not yet come.

yet ye have not known him, but I know him: and if I should say, I know him not, I should be a lyar like you: but I know him, and observe his commands.

and his disciples propos'd to him this question, master, was it for his own sins, or for the sins of his parents, that he was born blind?

it was not for any sin of his, said Jesus, or of his parents: but that the works of God might be displayed thro' him.

having said this, he spit on the ground, which by means of his saliva he made into clay, wherewith he anointed the eyes of the blind man,

now it was the sabbath-day when Jesus made the clay, and gave him his sight.

the Pharisees therefore ask'd him likewise, how he had received his sight. he told them, he put clay upon mine eyes, and I washed, and now see.

but the Jews were so incredulous about his having been blind, and obtain'd sight, that they sent for his parents,

his parents answered, that this is our son, and that he was born blind: we are very certain.

his parents said this, because they were afraid of the Jews: for the Jews had agreed in this, that if any man did own him for the Messias, he should be excommunicated.

it was this made his parents say, "he is of age, ask him."

I have already told you that, said he, and did you not hear it? why would ye hear it over again? have you likewise a mind to be his disciples?

then they reviled him, and said, thou art his disciple; but we are Moses disciples.

now 'tis certain, that God does not countenance impostors: but regards him only that is religious, and executes his commands.

if this man had not his mission from God, he could do nothing.

the porter lets him in, and the sheep know his voice: he calls his own sheep by name, and leads them out to pasture.

when he lets out his own sheep, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him: because they know his voice.

Jesus talk'd to them in this figurative way: but they did not understand the meaning of his discourse.
