And Joshua said to them, "Go into the middle of the Jordan in front of the special box of the agreement of the Lord your God. Each of you take a stone on his shoulder, one for each of the twelve family groups of Israel.

For the Lord your God dried up the water of the Jordan before you until you had crossed. It was just as the Lord your God had done to the Red Sea, which He dried up before us until we had crossed.

Now all the people of the earth may know that the hand of the Lord is powerful, so that you may fear the Lord your God forever."

Joshua said, "O Lord God, why did You ever bring this nation over the Jordan, only to give us into the hand of the Amorites to be destroyed? If only we had been willing to live on the other side of the Jordan!

Get up! Set apart the people and say, ‘Make yourselves holy for tomorrow. For the Lord, the God of Israel, has said, "There are things among you which should be destroyed, O Israel. You cannot stand in front of those who fight against you until you take away the things among you which should be destroyed."

Joshua said to Achan, "My son, I beg you, give honor and praise to the Lord, the God of Israel. Tell me now what you have done. Do not hide it from me."

Achan answered Joshua, saying, "It is true. I have sinned against the Lord, the God of Israel. This is what I did.

Then Joshua built an altar to the Lord, the God of Israel, at Mount Ebal.

They said to him, "Your servants have come from a very far country because of the name of the Lord your God. For we have heard about Him and all He did in Egypt.

But the people of Israel did not kill them because the leaders of the people had made a promise to them by the Lord the God of Israel. All the people complained against the leaders.

Then all the leaders said to all the people, "We have made a promise to them by the Lord, the God of Israel. Now we cannot touch them.

Now you are cursed. You will never stop being servants, cutting wood and bringing water, for the house of my God."

They answered Joshua, "Because it was told to your servants that the Lord your God had told His servant Moses to give you all the land and kill all the people of the land in front of you. We were very much afraid for our lives because of you. That is why we have done this thing.

But do not stay there yourselves. Go after those who hate you. Follow after them and fight. Do not let them go into their cities. For the Lord your God has given them into your hand."

So Joshua won the war against the whole land, the hill country, the Negev, the valleys, the hill-sides, and all their kings. He left no one alive. He destroyed all who breathed, just as the Lord, the God of Israel, had told him.

Joshua took all these kings and their lands at the same time. Because the Lord, the God of Israel, fought for Israel.
