I, the Sovereign Lord , am watching this sinful kingdom of Israel, and I will destroy it from the face of the earth. But I will not destroy all the descendants of Jacob.

He said, "Go to Nineveh, that great city, and speak out against it; I am aware of how wicked its people are."

"I am a Hebrew," Jonah answered. "I worship the Lord , the God of heaven, who made land and sea."

Now then, Lord , let me die. I am better off dead than alive."

After the sun had risen, God sent a hot east wind, and Jonah was about to faint from the heat of the sun beating down on his head. So he wished he were dead. "I am better off dead than alive," he said.

And so the Lord says, "I am planning to bring disaster on you, and you will not be able to escape it. You are going to find yourselves in trouble, and then you will not walk so proudly any more.

It's hopeless! I am like a hungry person who finds no fruit left on the trees and no grapes on the vines. All the grapes and all the tasty figs have been picked.

This is what the Lord has decreed about the Assyrians: "They will have no descendants to carry on their name. I will destroy the idols that are in the temples of their gods. I am preparing a grave for the Assyrians—they don't deserve to live!"

"I am your enemy!" says the Lord Almighty. "I will burn up your chariots. Your soldiers will be killed in war, and I will take away everything that you took from others. The demands of your envoys will no longer be heard."

Then the Lord said to his people, "Keep watching the nations around you, and you will be astonished at what you see. I am going to do something that you will not believe when you hear about it.

I am bringing the Babylonians to power, those fierce, restless people. They are marching out across the world to conquer other lands.

O Lord , I have heard of what you have done, and I am filled with awe. Now do again in our times the great deeds you used to do. Be merciful, even when you are angry.

The Lord said, "I am going to destroy everything on earth,

As surely as I am the living Lord , the God of Israel, I swear that Moab and Ammon are going to be destroyed like Sodom and Gomorrah. They will become a place of salt pits and everlasting ruin, overgrown with weeds. Those of my people who survive will plunder them and take their land."

But now don't be discouraged, any of you. Do the work, for I am with you.

When you came out of Egypt, I promised that I would always be with you. I am still with you, so do not be afraid.

for Zerubbabel, the governor of Judah: "I am about to shake heaven and earth

and I am very angry with the nations that enjoy quiet and peace. For while I was holding back my anger against my people, those nations made the sufferings of my people worse.

The Lord said, "Sing for joy, people of Jerusalem! I am coming to live among you!"

I am placing in front of Joshua a single stone with seven facets. I will engrave an inscription on it, and in a single day I will take away the sin of this land.
