Don't you realize, brothers - for I am speaking to people who know the law - that the law can press its claims over a person only as long as he is alive?

For a married woman is bound by the law to her husband while he is living, but if her husband dies, she is released from the law concerning her husband.1 Corinthians 7:39;">[xr]

In the same way, my brothers, through Christ's body you also died as far as the law is concerned, so that you may belong to another person, the one who was raised from the dead, and may bear fruit for God.Romans 8:2; Galatians 2:19; Ephesians 2:15; Colossians 2:14;">[xr]

What should we say, then? Is the law sinful? Of course not! In fact, I wouldn't have known sin if it had not been for the law. For sin, seizing the opportunity provided by the commandment, deceived me and used it to kill me.

For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am mere flesh, sold as a slave to sin.sold under sin">[fn]1 Kings 21:20,25; 2 Kings 17:17;">[xr]

I don't understand what I am doing. For I don't do what I want to do, but instead do what I hate.Galatians 5:17;">[xr]

For I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but I cannot carry it out.Genesis 6:5; 8:21;">[xr]

For I don't do the good I want to do, but instead do the evil that I don't want to do.

For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to deal with sin. He condemned sin in the fleshActs 13:39; Romans 3:20; 2 Corinthians 5:21; Galatians 3:13; Hebrews 7:18-19;">[xr]

For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit.John 3:6; 1 Corinthians 2:14; Galatians 5:22,25;">[xr]

That is why the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile toward God. For it refuses to submit to the authority of God's law because it is powerless to do so.1 Corinthians 2:14; James 4:4;">[xr]
