Introduction

1 We proclaim to you the one who existed from the beginning,[a] whom we have heard and seen. We saw him with our own eyes and touched him with our own hands. He is the Word of life.

Christ—the Word of Life

1 Christ is the Word of Life. He was from the beginning. We have heard Him and have seen Him with our own eyes. We have looked at Him and put our hands on Him.

The Word of Life

1 We declare to you what was from the beginning, what we have heard, what we have seen with our eyes, what we have looked at and touched with our hands, concerning the word of life—

1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we for ourselves gazed upon, and our hands did handle, concerning the Word of Life, -

1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon and our hands have handled, of the word of life.

1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon and touched with our hands, concerning the word of life--

1 That which was fro the begynninge concerninge which we have hearde which we have sene with oure eyes which we have loked vpon and oure hondes have hadled of the worde of life.

1 That which was from the beginning, that which we have heard, that which we have seen with our eyes, that which we did behold, and our hands did handle, concerning the Word of the Life --

1 That which was from the beginning, that which we have heard, that which we have seen with our eyes, that which we beheld, and our hands handled, concerning the Word of Life—

1 That which was from ye begynnynge, which we haue herde, which we haue sene with or eyes, which we haue loked vpon, and or handes haue handled of the worde of life:

1 Concerning the Logos, the author of Life, we declare what was from the beginning, what we have heard, what we have seen with our eyes, what we have consider'd, and what has been the object of our touch. 1-2 From the very first day, we were there, taking it all in—we heard it with our own ears, saw it with our own eyes, verified it with our own hands. The Word of Life appeared right before our eyes; we saw it happen! And now we're telling you in most sober prose that what we witnessed was, incredibly, this: The infinite Life of God himself took shape before us.

The Life of the Word

1 We are here to tell you the story of the Word of Life. It existed when nothing existed. We've seen it with our own eyes, heard it with our own ears, and touched it with our own hands. 2 that life was revealed,(C1) and we have seen it and we testify and declare to you the eternal life that was with the Father and was revealed to us(C2)2 (For the life was manifested, and we haue seene it, and beare witnes, and shew vnto you that eternall life which was with the Father, and was manifested vnto vs.)

2 (For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;) 2 (g)the life (h)was made manifest, and we have seen it, and (i)testify to it and proclaim to you the eternal life, (j)which was with the Father and (k)was made manifest to us—2 and (C1)the life was revealed, and we have (C2)seen and (C3)testify and proclaim to you (C4)the eternal life, which was (C5)with the Father and was (C1)revealed to us— 2 He who gives life was shown to us. We saw him and can give proof about it. And now we announce to you that he has life that continues forever. He was with God the Father and was shown to us. 2 and (C1)the life was manifested, and we have (C2)seen and (C3)testify and proclaim to you (C4)the eternal life, which was (C5)with the Father and was (C1)manifested to us--2 And this is the life that was revealed; we have seen it and testified to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life that was with the Father and was revealed to us.

2 The one who gives life appeared! We saw it happen, and we are witnesses to what we have seen. Now we are telling you about this eternal life that was with the Father and appeared to us.

2 The life appeared,
    and we have seen it.
We are testifying to it
and announcing it to you —
eternal life!

He was with the Father,
    and he appeared to us.

2 (and the life has been manifested, and we have seen, and bear witness, and report to you the eternal life, which was with the Father, and has been manifested to us:) 2 Yes, the one who is life was shown to us. We saw him, and so we can tell others about him. We now tell you about him. He is the eternal life that was with God the Father and was shown to us.2 (For that life was made manifest, and wee haue seene it, and beare witnes, and shewe vnto you that eternall life, which was with the Father, and was made manifest vnto vs)2 For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness to it, and preach to you eternal life, which was with the Father, and was revealed to us; 2 (b)When this life became visible, we saw it; so we speak of it and tell you about the eternal life which was with the Father and was made known to us. 2 and the life was revealed, and we have seen and testify and announce to you the eternal life which was with the Father and was revealed to us—2 And the Life was revealed, and we have seen, and we bear witness, and we announce to you the everlasting Life which was with the Father, and was revealed to us.2 and (C1)the Life an aspect of His being was manifested, and we have (C2)seen it as eyewitnesses and (C3)testify and declare to you the Life, (C4)the eternal Life who was already existing (C5)with the Father and was actually (C1)made visible to us His followers 2 (and the life was manifested, and we have seen, and bear witness, and declare unto you the life, the eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us); 2 (And the life was made clear to us, and we have seen it and are witnessing to it and giving you word of that eternal life which was with the Father and was seen by us);2 (and the life was revealed, and we have seen, and testify, and declare to you the life, the eternal life, which was with the Father, and was revealed to us); 2 This life was revealed to us, and we have seen it and testify about it. We declare to you this eternal life that was with the Father and was revealed to us.[xr] 2 And the life was manifested, and we have seen, and testify, and preach to you the eternal life which was with the Father, and was manifested to us.2 And the life was manifested, and we have seen and do testify and announce to you, the life which is eternal; which was with the Father, and was revealed to us.2 (And the lyfe appeared, and we haue seene, and beare witnesse, and shewe vnto you that eternall lyfe which was with the father, and appeared vnto vs.)2 (and the life was manifested, and we have seen, and bear witness, and declare unto you the life, the eternal [life], which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us); 2 (and the life was revealed, and we have seen, and testify, and declare to you the life, the eternal life, which was with the Father, and was revealed to us); 2 For the life was manifested, and we have seen, and testify and declare to you the eternal life which was with the Father, and was manifested to us:2 the Life was manifested, and we have seen and bear witness, and we declare unto you the Life of the Ages which was with the Father and was manifested to us--2 And we sayn, and we witnessen, and tellen to you the euerlastynge lijf, that was anentis the fadir, and apperide to vs.2 -and the life was manifested, and we have seen, and bear witness, and declare to you the life, the eternal [life], which was with the Father, and was manifested to us-2 (For the life was manifested, and we have seen [it], and testify, and show to you that eternal life which was with the Father, and was manifested to us;) 2 and the life was revealed, and we have seen and testify and announce to you the eternal life that was with the Father and was revealed to us). 2 the life was manifested, and we have seen, and bear witness, and declare to you that eternal life which was with the Father and was manifested to us-- 2 This one who is life itself was revealed to us, and we have seen him. And now we testify and proclaim to you that he is the one who is eternal life. He was with the Father, and then he was revealed to us. 2 Christ Who is Life was shown to us. We saw Him. We tell you and preach about the Life that lasts forever. He was with the Father and He has come down to us. 2 this life was revealed, and we have seen it and testify to it, and declare to you the eternal life that was with the Father and was revealed to us— 2 And, the Life, was made manifest, and we have seen, and are bearing witness, and announcing unto you, the Age-abiding Life, which, indeed, was with the Father, and was made manifest unto us;2 For the life was manifested: and we have seen and do bear witness and declare unto you the life eternal, which was with the Father and hath appeared to us.2 the life was made manifest, and we saw it, and testify to it, and proclaim to you the eternal life which was with the Father and was made manifest to us--2 For the lyfe appered and we have sene and beare witnes and shewe vnto you that eternall lyfe which was with the father and appered vnto vs.2 and the Life was manifested, and we have seen, and do testify, and declare to you the Life, the age-during, which was with the Father, and was manifested to us --2 and the Life appeared, and we have seen, and testify, and declare to you the continuous Life, which was with the Father, and was revealed to us—2 and the life hath appeared, and we haue sene, and beare wytnes, and shewe vnto you ye life that is euerlastinge, which was with the father, and hath apeared vnto vs.2 for the life was manifested, we have seen it, we testify of it, and denounce unto you, that eternal life which was with the father, and was manifested unto us. 2 When this life showed itself to the world, we were right there. We were eyewitnesses to the glory, not bards or poets with fantastical tales of whim and fancy. We are here to tell you about the eternal life which is offered by the Father and made known to us. 3 what we have seen and heard we also declare to you, so that you may also have fellowship(C1) with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father(C2) and with his Son Jesus Christ. 3 That which wee haue seene and heard, declare we vnto you, that ye also may haue felowship with vs; and truely our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Sonne Iesus Christ.

And we share in it with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ.
3 What we have seen and heard,
    we are proclaiming to you;
so that you too
    may have fellowship with us.
Our fellowship is with the Father
and with his Son, Yeshua the Messiah.

3 that which we have seen and heard we report to you, that *ye* also may have fellowship with us; and our fellowship [is] indeed with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ. 3 We are telling you about what we have seen and heard because we want you to have fellowship[b] with us. The fellowship we share together is with God the Father and his Son Jesus Christ.3 That, I say, which wee haue seene and heard, declare wee vnto you, that yee may also haue fellowship with vs, and that our fellowship also may be with the Father, and with his Sonne Iesvs Christ.3 It is that which we have seen and heard that we declare to you, so that you also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ. 3 What we have seen and heard we announce to you also, so that you will join with us in the fellowship that we have with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ. 3 what we have seen and heard, we announce to you also, in order that you also may have fellowship with us, and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ. 3 We announce to you what we have seen, and what we have heard, that you also may have fellowship with us. And truly our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son, Jesus Christ.3 what we have (C1)seen and (C2)heard we also proclaim to you, so that you too may have fellowship as partners with us. And indeed our (C3)fellowship which is a distinguishing mark of born-again believers is with the Father, and with His Son Jesus Christ. 3 that which we have seen and heard declare we unto you also, that ye also may have fellowship with us: yea, and our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ: 3 We give you word of all we have seen and everything which has come to our ears, so that you may be united with us; and we are united with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ:3 that which we have seen and heard we declare to you, that you also may have fellowship with us. Yes, and our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son, Yeshua the Messiah. 3 What we have seen and heard we declare to you so that you, too, can have fellowship with us. 5 This, in essence, is the message we heard from Christ and are passing on to you: God is light, pure light; there's not a trace of darkness in him.

The Light

5 This is what the Son told us about his Father. God is light and there is no darkness in him at all. 6 If we say, “We have fellowship(C1) with him,” and yet we walk in darkness,(C2) we are lying and are not practicing the truth.(C3) 6 If we say that we haue felowship with him, and walke in darkenesse, we lie, and doe not the trueth.

6 If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth: 6 (q)If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and (r)do not practice the truth.6 (C1)If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we (C2)lie and (C3)do not practice the truth; 6 So if we say we have fellowship with God, but we continue living in darkness, we are liars and do not follow the truth. 6 (C1)If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we (C2)lie and (C3)do not practice the truth;6 If we say we have fellowship with Him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.

6 If we say that we share in life with God and keep on living in the dark, we are lying and are not living by the truth.

6 If we claim to have fellowship with him while we are walking in the darkness, we are lying and not living out the truth.

6 If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not practise the truth. 6 So if we say that we share in life with God, but we continue living in darkness, we are liars, who don't follow the truth.6 If wee say that wee haue fellowship with him, and walke in darkenesse, we lie, and doe not truely:6 If we say that we have fellowship with him and yet live in darkness, we lie, and do not follow the truth: 6 If, then, we say that we have fellowship with him, yet at the same time live in the darkness, we are lying both in our words and in our actions. 6 If we say that we have fellowship with him and walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.[a] 6 If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and we walk in darkness, we lie and are not practicing the truth.
