The Only Way to Know We're in Him
2-3 Here's how we can be sure that we know God in the right way: Keep his commandments.
4-6 If someone claims, "I know him well!" but doesn't keep his commandments, he's obviously a liar. His life doesn't match his words. But the one who keeps God's word is the person in whom we see God's mature love. This is the only way to be sure we're in God. Anyone who claims to be intimate with God ought to live the same kind of life Jesus lived.
7-8 My dear friends, I'm not writing anything new here. This is the oldest commandment in the book, and you've known it from day one. It's always been implicit in the Message you've heard. On the other hand, perhaps it is new, freshly minted as it is in both Christ and you—the darkness on its way out and the True Light already blazing!
9-11 Anyone who claims to live in God's light and hates a brother or sister is still in the dark. It's the person who loves brother and sister who dwells in God's light and doesn't block the light from others. But whoever hates is still in the dark, stumbles around in the dark, doesn't know which end is up, blinded by the darkness.
Loving the World
12-13 I remind you, my dear children: Your sins are forgiven in Jesus' name. You veterans were in on the ground floor, and know the One who started all this; you newcomers have won a big victory over the Evil One.
13-14 And a second reminder, dear children: You know the Father from personal experience. You veterans know the One who started it all; and you newcomers—such vitality and strength! God's word is so steady in you. Your fellowship with God enables you to gain a victory over the Evil One.
15-17 Don't love the world's ways. Don't love the world's goods. Love of the world squeezes out love for the Father. Practically everything that goes on in the world—wanting your own way, wanting everything for yourself, wanting to appear important—has nothing to do with the Father. It just isolates you from him. The world and all its wanting, wanting, wanting is on the way out—but whoever does what God wants is set for eternity.
Antichrists Everywhere You Look
18 Children, time is just about up. You heard that Antichrist is coming. Well, they're all over the place, antichrists everywhere you look. That's how we know that we're close to the end.
19 They left us, but they were never really with us. If they had been, they would have stuck it out with us, loyal to the end. In leaving, they showed their true colors, showed they never did belong.
20-21 But you belong. The Holy One anointed you, and you all know it. I haven't been writing this to tell you something you don't know, but to confirm the truth you do know, and to remind you that the truth doesn't breed lies.
22-23 So who is lying here? It's the person who denies that Jesus is the Divine Christ, that's who. This is what makes an antichrist: denying the Father, denying the Son. No one who denies the Son has any part with the Father, but affirming the Son is an embrace of the Father as well.
24-25 Stay with what you heard from the beginning, the original message. Let it sink into your life. If what you heard from the beginning lives deeply in you, you will live deeply in both Son and Father. This is exactly what Christ promised: eternal life, real life!
26-27 I've written to warn you about those who are trying to deceive you. But they're no match for what is embedded deeply within you—Christ's anointing, no less! You don't need any of their so-called teaching. Christ's anointing teaches you the truth on everything you need to know about yourself and him, uncontaminated by a single lie. Live deeply in what you were taught.
Live Deeply in Christ
28 And now, children, stay with Christ. Live deeply in Christ. Then we'll be ready for him when he appears, ready to receive him with open arms, with no cause for red-faced guilt or lame excuses when he arrives.
29 Once you're convinced that he is right and righteous, you'll recognize that all who practice righteousness are God's true children.
1 The point of this letter is so you will turn loose of your sins. But just in case we fall off and do sin, we have someone who is pleading our case on our behalf before God. That man is Jesus Christ, the only perfect man to ever live—and he is on our side!
2 He himself is the atoning sacrifice(F1)(C1) for our sins, and not only for ours, but also for those of the whole world.(C2)2 And he is the propitiation for our sinnes: and not for ours onely, but also for the sinnes of the whole world.2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world. 2 (b)He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but (c)also for the sins of the whole world.2 and He Himself is (C1)the (F1)propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also (C2)for the sins of the whole world.

2 and he is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for the whole world. 2 He is the offering for our sins; and not for ours only, but for all the world.2 And he is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not for ours only, but also for the whole world. 2 It is he who is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not for ours only, but also for the whole world's.[xr] 2 for he is the propitiation for our sins, and not on behalf of ours only, but also on behalf of the whole world.2 For he is himself the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for all the world.2 And he is ye attonement for our sinnes: not for our sinnes only, but also for the sinnes of all the worlde.2 and he is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for the whole world. 2 And he is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not for ours only, but also for the whole world. 2 and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.2 and He is an atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.2 Jhesu Crist, and he is the foryyuenes for oure synnes; and not oneli for oure synnes, but also for the synnes of al the world.2 and he is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for the whole world.2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for [the sins of] the whole world. 2 and he himself is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for our sins but also for the whole world.2 And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world. 2 He himself is the sacrifice that atones for our sins—and not only our sins but the sins of all the world. 2 He paid for our sins with His own blood. And it's not just our sins, but everyone's.God’s Commands
3 This is how we know(C1) that we know him: if we keep his commands.(C2)
3 And hereby wee doe knowe that we know him, if we keepe his commandements.
3 And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. 3 And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we (d)keep his commandments.
3 (C1)By this we know that we have come to (C2)know Him, if we (C3)keep His commandments.
3 We can be sure that we know God if we obey his commands. 1-2 I write this, dear children, to guide you out of sin. But if anyone does sin, we have a Priest-Friend in the presence of the Father: Jesus Christ, righteous Jesus. When he served as a sacrifice for our sins, he solved the sin problem for good—not only ours, but the whole world's.
The Only Way to Know We're in Him
2-3 Here's how we can be sure that we know God in the right way: Keep his commandments.
3 (C1)By this we know that we have come to (C2)know Him, if we (C3)keep His commandments.
3 By this we can be sure that we have come to know Him: if we keep His commandments.
3 When we obey God, we are sure that we know him.
3 The way we can be sure we know him is if we are obeying his commands.
3 And hereby we know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.
3 If we obey what God has told us to do, then we are sure that we know him.
3 And hereby we are sure that we knowe him, if we keepe his commandements.
3 And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.
3 If we obey God's commands, then we are sure that we know him. 3 And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments.
3 And by this we know that we have known Him, if we keep His commands.
3 (C1)And this is how we know daily, by experience that we have come to (C2)know Him to understand Him and be more deeply acquainted with Him: if we habitually (C3)keep focused on His precepts and obey His commandments (teachings). 3 And hereby we know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.
3 And by this we may be certain that we have knowledge of him, if we keep his laws.
3 This is how we know that we know him: if we keep his mitzvot.
3 This is how we can be sure that we have come to know him: if we continually keep his commandments.
3 And by this we feel that we know him, if we keep his commandments.
3 And by this we shall be sensible that we know him, if we keep his commandments.
3 And hereby we are sure that we knowe hym, yf we kepe his comaundementes.
3 And hereby know we that we know him, if we keep his commandments.
3 This is how we know that we know him: if we keep his commandments.
3 And hereby we know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.
3 And by this we may know that we know Him--if we obey His commands.
3 And in this thing we witen, that we knowen hym, if we kepen hise comaundementis.
3 And hereby we know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.
3 And by this we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.
Keeping God's Commandments
3 Now by this we know that we have come to know God: if we keep his commandments.
3 Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments.
3 And we can be sure that we know him if we obey his commandments.
3 We can be sure that we know Him if we obey His teaching.
3 Now by this we may be sure that we know him, if we obey his commandments.
3 And, hereby, perceive we, that we understand him, - if, his commandments, we are keeping.
3 And by this we know that we have known him, if we keep his commandments.
3 And by this we may be sure that we know him, if we keep his commandments.
3 And herby we are sure that we knowe him yf we kepe his comaundementes.
3 and in this we know that we have known him, if his commands we may keep;
3 and in this we know that we have known Him, if we may keep His commands;
3 And hereby are we sure that we knowe him, yf we kepe his comaundemetes.
3 if we keep his commandments, that is a proof that we know him.
3 The one way to know for sure you ride for the brand is if you obey God's commands.
4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 4 Whoever says "I know him" but does not keep his commandments (e)is a liar, and (f)the truth is not in him,4 The one who says, "(C1)I have come to (C2)know Him," and does not keep His commandments, is a (C3)liar, and (C4)the truth is not in him; 4 Anyone who says, "I know God," but does not obey God's commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person. 4-6 If someone claims, "I know him well!" but doesn't keep his commandments, he's obviously a liar. His life doesn't match his words. But the one who keeps God's word is the person in whom we see God's mature love. This is the only way to be sure we're in God. Anyone who claims to be intimate with God ought to live the same kind of life Jesus lived.4 The one who says, "(C1)I have come to (C2)know Him," and does not keep His commandments, is a (C3)liar, and (C4)the truth is not in him;4 If anyone says, “I know Him,” but does not keep His commandments, he is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 4 But if we claim to know him and don't obey him, we are lying and the truth isn't in our hearts. 4 Anyone who says, "I know him," but isn't obeying his commands is a liar — the truth is not in him.
4 He that says, I know him, and does not keep his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him; 4 If we say we know God but do not obey his commands, we are lying. The truth is not in us.4 Hee that saith, I knowe him, and keepeth not his commaundements, is a liar, and the trueth is not in him.4 He who says, I know him, and does not keep his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 4 If we say that we know him, but do not obey his commands, we are liars and there is no truth in us. 4 The one who says "I have come to know him," and does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in this person. 4 The one saying, I have known Him, and not keeping His commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that one.4 Whoever says, "(C1)I have come to (C2)know Him," but does not habitually keep focused on His precepts and obey His commandments (teachings), is a (C3)liar, and (C4)the truth of the divine word is not in him. 4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him; 4 The man who says, I have knowledge of him, and does not keep his laws, is false, and there is nothing true in him:4 He who says, "I know him," and doesn't keep his mitzvot, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 4 The person who says, "I have come to know him," but does not continually keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in that person.[xr] 4 For he who saith that he knoweth him, and his commandments keepeth not, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.4 For he that saith, I know him, and doth not keep his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.4 He that sayth I knowe hym, and kepeth not his commaundementes, is a lyer, and the veritie is not in hym:4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him: 4 He who says, "I know him," and doesn't keep his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 4 He that faith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.4 He who professes to know Him, and yet does not obey His commands, is a liar, and the truth has no place in his heart.4 He that seith that he knowith God, and kepith not hise comaundementis, is a liere, and trewthe is not in hym.4 He that says, I know him, and doesn't keep his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him;4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 4 The one who says "I have come to know God" and yet does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in such a person. 4 He who says, "I know Him," and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 4 If someone claims, "I know God," but doesn't obey God's commandments, that person is a liar and is not living in the truth. 4 Anyone who says, "I know Him," but does not obey His teaching is a liar. There is no truth in him. 4 Whoever says, "I have come to know him," but does not obey his commandments, is a liar, and in such a person the truth does not exist; 4 He that saith - I understand him! And, his commandments, is not keeping, is false, and, in him, the truth is not!4 He who saith that he knoweth him and keepeth not his commandments is a liar: and the truth is not in him.4 He who says "I know him" but disobeys his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him;4 He that sayth I knowe him and kepeth not his commaundementes is a lyar and the veritie is not in him.4 he who is saying, `I have known him,' and his command is not keeping, a liar he is, and in him the truth is not;4 he who is saying, "I have known Him," and is not keeping His commands, is a liar, and the truth is not in him;4 He that sayeth: I knowe him, and kepeth not his comaundemetes, is a lyar, and the trueth is not in him,4 he that says, he knows him, and does not keep his commandments, is a lyar, and an enemy to the truth: 4 If we say we ride for him, but we don't do what he says, then we are counterfeits and fakes and there is no truth in us at all. 5 But whoever keeps his word,(C1) truly in him the love of God is made complete. This is how we know we are in him:(C2) 5 But who so keepeth his word, in him verely is the loue of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.
5 But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him. 5 but whoever (g)keeps his word, in him truly (h)the love of God is perfected. (i)By this we may know that we are in him:5 but whoever (C1)follows His word, in him the (C2)love of God has truly been perfected. (C3)By this we know that we are in Him: 5 But if someone obeys God's teaching, then in that person God's love has truly reached its goal. This is how we can be sure we are living in God: 5 but whoever (C1)keeps His word, in him the (C2)love of God has truly been perfected. (C3)By this we know that we are in Him:5 But if anyone keeps His word, the love of God has been truly perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him: 5 We truly love God only when we obey him as we should, and then we know that we belong to him. 5 But if someone keeps doing what he says, then truly love for God has been brought to its goal in him. This is how we are sure that we are united with him.
5 but whoever keeps his word, in him verily the love of God is perfected. Hereby we know that we are in him. 5 But when we obey God's teaching, his love is truly working in us. This is how we know that we are living in him.5 But hee that keepeth his worde, in him is the loue of God perfect in deede: hereby wee knowe that ye are in him.5 But whoso keeps his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby we know that we are in him. 5 But if we obey his word, we are the ones whose love for God has really been made perfect. This is how we can be sure that we are in union with God: 5 But whoever keeps his word, truly in this person the love of God has been perfected. By this we know that we are in him. 5 But whoever keeps His Word, truly in this one the love of God has been perfected. By this we know that we are in Him.5 But whoever habitually (C1)keeps His word and obeys His precepts and treasures His message in its entirety, in him the (C2)love of God has truly been perfected it is completed and has reached maturity. (C3)By this we know for certain that we are in Him: 5 but whoso keepeth his word, in him verily hath the love of God been perfected. Hereby we know that we are in him: 5 But in every man who keeps his word, the love of God is made complete. By this we may be certain that we are in him:5 But whoever keeps his word, God's love has most assuredly been perfected in him. This is how we know that we are in him: 5 But whoever continually keeps his word is the kind of person in whom God's love has truly been perfected. This is how we can be sure that we are in union with him:[xr] 5 But he who keepeth his word, in him is perfected truly the love of Aloha; for by this we know that we are in him.5 But he that keepeth his word, in him is the love of God truly completed: for by this we know that we are in him.5 But who so kepeth his worde, in him is the loue of God perfect in deede. Hereby knowe we that we are in hym.5 but whoso keepeth his word, in him verily hath the love of God been perfected. Hereby know we that we are in him: 5 But whoever keeps his word, God's love has most assuredly been perfected in him. By this we can know that we are in Him.5 But the charite of God is perfit verili in hym, that kepith his word. In this thing we witen, that we ben in hym, if we ben perfit in hym.5 but whoever keeps his word, in him truly has the love of God been perfected. This is the way to know if you belong to Christ. 5 but whoever obeys his word, truly in this person the love of God has reached perfection. By this we may be sure that we are in him: 5 But whosoever may be keeping his word, of a truth, in this man, the love of God hath been made perfect. Hereby, perceive we, that, in him, we are.5 But he that keepeth his word, in him in very deed the charity of God is perfected. This is how to know if you are really riding for him or not: 6 The one who says he remains in him(C1) should walk just as he walked.
6 He that sayeth he abideth in him, ought himselfe also so to walke, euen as he walked.6 He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked. 6 whoever says he (j)abides in him (k)ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.6 the one who says that he (C1)remains in Him (C2)ought, himself also, to walk just as He walked.
6 Whoever says that he lives in God must live as Jesus lived.6 the one who says he (C1)abides in Him (C2)ought himself to walk in the same manner as He walked.6 Whoever claims to abide in Him must walk as Jesus walked. 6 If we say we are his, we must follow the example of Christ. 6 A person who claims to be continuing in union with him ought to conduct his life the way he did.6 He that says he abides in him ought, even as *he* walked, himself also [so] to walk. 6 If we say we live in God, we must live the way Jesus lived.6 He that saith he remaineth in him, ought euen so to walke, as he hath walked.6 He who says, he abides in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked. 6 if we say that we remain in union with God, we should live just as Jesus Christ did. 6 The one who says that he resides in him ought also to walk[c] just as that one walked.6 The one claiming to rest in Him ought so to walk himself as that One walked.
