He threw stones at David and at all the royal servants, the people and the warriors on David’s right and left. He cast stones at David, and at all the servants of king David: and all the people and all the mighty men were on his right hand and on his left. Shimei began throwing stones at David and his officers. Both the people and the soldiers gathered around David to protect him—they were all around him. And he threw stones at him and at all his servants and at all his people and at all his servants who were on his right hand and on his left. Shimei started throwing stones at David and his officials, even though David was surrounded by his men and his bodyguards. And he stoned David with stones and all the servants of King David, and all the people, and all the mighty men on his right and on his left. and cast stones at Dauid, and at all kynge Dauids seruauntes and all the people and all the mightie men men were at his righte hande and at his lefte. And he cast stones at David, and at all the servants of king David: and all the people and all the mighty men were on his right hand and on his left. Gill's Notes on the Bible

And he cast stones at David, and at all the servants of King David,.... Not that he was within the reach of them, or could hurt them, by casting them at them; but this he did to show his contempt of them, and to intimate that they deserved to be stoned, and especially David, at whose adultery he might point by it:

and all the people, and all the mighty men [were] on his right hand,

and on his left; that is, of David; which is observed, not so much to indicate the safety of David's person, as the impudence and madness of Shimei, to cast stones at David when so guarded.
