He measured two cords to kill and the third cord^[a] to let live.^[b] So Moab became servants of David, bringing tribute.

² He also defeated the people of Moab. He made them lie on the ground, and then he used a rope to measure them. Those who were measured within two rope lengths were killed, but those who were within the next rope length were allowed to live. So the people of Moab became servants of David and gave him the payment he demanded. ² He defeated the Moabites. He made them lie on the ground and then used a rope to measure them off. ³ David smote also Hadadezer, the son of Rehob, king of Zobah, as he went to recover his border at the river Euphrates. ³ Then David struck down Hadadezer the son of Rehob, king of Zobah, when he went to restore his monument^[c] at the Euphrates River.

³ And David smote Hadadezer, the son of Rehob, king of Zobah, as he went to recover his dominion by the river Euphrates.

³ Then David won the battle against Hadadezer the son of Rehob king of Zobah, as he went to get his power again at the Euphrates River.

³ David also struck down King Hadadezer son of Rehob of Zobah, as he went to restore his monument^[b] at the river Euphrates. ³ And David smote Hadadezer son of Rehob, king of Zobah, - when he went to lay his hand on the River Euphrates.³ David defeated also Adarezer the son of Rohob king of Soba, when he went to extend his dominion over the river Euphrates.³ David also defeated Hadade'zer the son of Rehob, king of Zobah, as he went to restore his power at the river Euphra'tes.³ And David strikes Hadadezer son of Rehob, king of Zobah, in his going to bring back his power by the River [Euphrates];^3-4 On his way to restore his sovereignty at the River Euphrates, David next defeated Hadadezer son of Rehob the king of Zobah. He captured from him a thousand chariots, seven thousand cavalry, and twenty thousand infantry. He hamstrung all the chariot horses, but saved back a hundred.

³ Then David ^(F1)defeated ^(C1)Hadadezer, the son of Rehob king of Zobah, as ^(C2)he went to restore his ^(F2)rule at the ^(F3)River.⁴ David captured seventeen hundred horsemen^(F1) and twenty thousand foot soldiers from him, and he hamstrung all the horses^(C1) and kept a hundred chariots.^(F2)

⁴ And David took from him a thousand chariots, and seven hundred horsemen, and twenty thousand footmen: and David houghed all the chariot horses, but reserved of them for an hundred chariots. ⁴ David captured from him one thousand and seven hundred horsemen and twenty thousand foot soldiers.^[d] David hamstrung all the chariot horses, but from them^[e] he spared a hundred chariot horses. ^4 (h)And David took from him 1,700 horsemen, and 20,000 foot soldiers. And David ⁽ⁱ⁾hamstrung all the chariot horses but left enough for 100 chariots. ⁴ David captured one thousand chariots, seven thousand men who rode in chariots, and twenty thousand foot soldiers. He crippled all but a hundred of the chariot horses. ⁴ David seized from him 1,700 charioteers and 20,000 infantrymen. David cut the hamstrings of all but a hundred of the chariot horses. ⁴ David captured from him 1,700 horsemen and 20,000 foot soldiers. David also ^(C1)hamstrung all the chariot horses (making them lame), but reserved enough of them for a hundred chariots.⁴ And David captured from him ^(F1)1,700 horsemen and twenty thousand foot soldiers; and David ^(C1)hamstrung almost all the chariot horses, but left enough of them for a hundred chariots.⁴ And Dauid tooke of them a thousand and seuen hundreth horsemen, and twenty thousande footemen, and Dauid destroyed all the charets, but he reserued an hundreth charets of them.⁴ And David captured from him 1,700 horsemen and 20,000 foot soldiers; and David ^(C1)hamstrung all the chariot horses, but left enough of them for 100 chariots. ⁴ In the battle, David captured seventeen hundred cavalry^[d] and twenty thousand foot soldiers. He also captured war chariots, but he destroyed all but one hundred of them.^{[e] 4} David captured 1,700 horsemen and 20,000 foot soldiers. He reserved enough horses for 100 chariots and disabled the rest.

He kept enough horses for a hundred chariots and crippled all the rest.⁴ And David captured from him seventeen hundred horsemen, and twenty thousand footmen.
