THE MESSAGE
At about this time Jeroboam's son Abijah came down sick. Jeroboam said to his wife, "Do something. Disguise yourself so no one will know you are the queen and go to Shiloh. Ahijah the prophet lives there, the same Ahijah who told me I'd be king over this people. Take along ten loaves of bread, some sweet rolls, and a jug of honey. Make a visit to him and he'll tell you what's going on with our boy."
New American Standard Bible (1995)
At that time Abijah the son of Jeroboam became sick.

Contextual Overview

1 At this time, Aviyah the son of Yarov‘am fell ill. 2 Yarov‘am said to his wife, "Please come, and disguise yourself, so that you won't be recognized as Yarov‘am's wife, and go to Shiloh. Achiyah the prophet is there, the one who said that I would be king over these people. 3 Take with you ten loaves of bread, some cakes and a jug of honey; and go to him. He will tell you what will happen to the boy." 4 Yarov‘am's wife did this; she set out, went to Shiloh and arrived at the house of Achiyah. Now Achiyah could not see, because his eyes were dim with age. 5 Adonai had told Achiyah, "Yarov‘am's wife is on her way to you to ask about her son, who is ill. You are to tell her thus and thus; moreover, when she comes, she will be pretending she is another woman." 6 When Achiyah heard the sound of her feet as she came in the door, he said, "Enter, wife of Yarov‘am! Why pretend you are someone else? I've been given bad news for you.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

At that time Abijah, the son of Jeroboam, fell sick. Being smitten of God with some disease, as a punishment of Jeroboam's sin; how long this was after the above things were done cannot be said.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

At that time - The phrase here connects the narrative which follows with Jeroboam’s persistence in his evil courses. The event related is the first judgment upon him for his obduracy, the beginning of the cutting off of his house from the face of the earth.

Abijah - We see by this name that Jeroboam did not intend to desert the worship of Yahweh, since its signification is “Yahweh is my father,” or “Yahweh is my desire” Job 34:36.

NOTES ON CHAP. XIV

Verse 1 Kings 14:1. Abijah - fell sick — This was but a prelude to the miseries which fell on the house of Jeroboam; but it was another merciful warning, intended to turn him from his idolatry and wickedness.
