THE MESSAGE
"‘Therefore, God , the Master, says, As sure as I am the living God, because the king despised my oath and broke my covenant, I'll bring the consequences crashing down on his head. I'll send out a search party and catch him. I'll take him to Babylon and have him brought to trial because of his total disregard for me. All his elite soldiers, along with the rest of the army, will be killed in battle, and whoever is left will be scattered to the four winds. Then you'll realize that I, God , have spoken.

He said, ² "Son of man, I have a story with a hidden meaning for you to tell the family of Israel. ³ Tell them that this is what the Lord God says: "‘A large eagle with big wings came to Lebanon. He had feathers covered with spots. ⁴ He broke the top out of that big cedar tree and brought it to Canaan. He set the branch down in a city of merchants. ⁵ Then the eagle took some of the seeds from Canaan. He planted them in good soil by a good river. ⁶ The seeds grew and became a grapevine. No, the new eagle will pull the plant from the ground, and the bird will break the plant's roots. It will eat up all the grapes. Then the new leaves will wilt. That plant will be very weak. It will not take strong arms or a powerful nation to pull that plant up by the roots. ¹⁰ Will the plant grow where it is planted? No, the hot east wind will blow, and the plant will become dry and die. It will die there where it was planted."

Gill's Notes on the Bible

Therefore thus saith the Lord God, [as] I live,.... A repetition of the oath of God as before, expressing his indignation at the king of Judah, and the certainty of his ruin:

surely mine oath that he hath despised, and my covenant that he hath broken; the Lord calls it his oath, because it was made and taken in his name, 2 Chronicles 36:13; and his covenant, because it was agreeable to his will, and was made in his sight, and he was solemnly appealed to at the making of it; all which were an aggravation of Zedekiah's sin in violating them, and made his punishment the heavier:

even it will I recompense upon his own head; he shall personally bear the punishment due to such crimes. The Targum is,

"I will revenge his way upon his head.''

Jarchi thinks this refers to the putting out of his eyes; and Kimchi takes notice of the same sense.
