Contextual Overview

1 In the fifth month of the fourth year that Zedekiah was king of Judah, the prophet Hananiah son of Azzur spoke to me. Hananiah was from the town of Gibeon. Hananiah was in the Lord 's Temple when he spoke to me. The priests and all the people were there also. This is what Hananiah said: 2 "The Lord All-Powerful, the God of the people of Israel, says: ‘I will break the yoke that the king of Babylon has put on the people of Judah. 3 Before two years are over, I will bring back all the things that King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon took from the Lord 's Temple. Nebuchadnezzar has carried those things to Babylon. But I will bring them back here to Jerusalem. 4 I will also bring the king of Judah, Jehoiachin son of Jehoiakim, back to this place. And I will bring back all the people of Judah that Nebuchadnezzar forced to leave their homes and go to Babylon,' says the Lord . ‘So I will break the yoke that the king of Babylon put on the people of Judah.'" 5 Then the prophet Jeremiah answered the prophet Hananiah. They were standing in the Temple of the Lord . The priests and all the people there could hear Jeremiah's answer. 6 Jeremiah said to Hananiah, "Amen! May the Lord do that. May the Lord make the message you say come true. May he bring the things of the Lord 's Temple back to this place from Babylon. And may he bring all those who were forced to leave their homes back to this place. 7 "But listen to what I have to say to you and to all the people. 8 There were prophets long before you and I became prophets, Hananiah. They spoke against many countries and great kingdoms and always warned that war, hunger, and disease would come to them. 9 So the prophet who says that we will have peace must be tested. People can know that he really was sent by the Lord only if his message comes true."

Bible Verse Review
  from Treasury of Scripure Knowledge

The prophets: As Hosea, Joel, Amos, Isaiah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, and others, all of whom had denounced similar evils against a corrupt people. So that they who opposed Jeremiah also opposed those who preceded him; and it was altogether unprecedented for a true prophet to promise deliverance to a guilty nation, without calling them to repentance.

prophesied: Leviticus 26:14-46, Deuteronomy 4:26, Deuteronomy 4:27, Deuteronomy 28:15-68, Deuteronomy 29:18-28, Deuteronomy 31:16, Deuteronomy 31:17, Deuteronomy 32:15-44, 1 Samuel 2:27-32, 1 Samuel 3:11-14, 1 Kings 14:7-15, 1 Kings 17:1, 1 Kings 21:18-24, 1 Kings 22:8, Isaiah 5:1-8, Isaiah 6:9-12, Isaiah 13:18, Isaiah 24:1-23, Joel 1:2-20, Joel 3:1-11, Micah 3:8-12, Nahum 1:1 - Nahum 3:19, Amos 1:2

Reciprocal: 1 Kings 22:28 - If thou return Jeremiah 20:8 - I cried Jeremiah 36:29 - The king

Gill's Notes on the Bible

The prophets that have been before me, and before thee of old,.... Such as Isaiah, Hoses, Joel, Amos, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, and others: these

prophesied both against many countries and against great kingdoms; as Egypt, Babylon, Syria, Ethiopia, Moab, c. as Isaiah particularly did:

of war, and of evil, and of pestilence by evil some think is meant famine, because that usually goes along with the other mentioned, and there being but one letter in which the words for evil and famine differ; and now the prophets that prophesied of these were sent of God, were the true prophets of the Lord; and therefore this ought not to be objected to the prejudice of Jeremiah, that his prophecies were of this sort: yea, if they should not come to pass, yet a man is not to be counted a false prophet, because such things are threatened in case nations do not repent of their sins and reform, which they may do; and then the evils threatened are prevented, as in the case of the Ninevites.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

Jeremiah’s own wishes concurred with Hananiah’s prediction, but asserts that that prediction was at variance with the language of the older prophets.

Jeremiah 28:9

Then shall the prophet ... - Or, “shall be known as the prophet whom the Lord hath truly sent.”

Clarke's Notes on the Bible

Verse Jeremiah 28:8. The prophets that have been before me — Namely, Joel, Amos, Hosea, Micah, Zephaniah, Nahum, Habakkuk, and others; all of whom denounced similar evils against a corrupt people.
