Contextual Overview

23 The LORD spoke to Moshe, saying, 24 Speak to the children of Yisra'el, saying, In the seventh month, on the first day of the month, shall be a solemn rest to you, a memorial of blowing of trumpets, a holy convocation. 25 You shall do no servile work; and you shall offer an offering made by fire to the LORD. 26 The LORD spoke to Moshe, saying, 27 However on the tenth day of this seventh month is Yom Kippur: it shall be a holy convocation to you, and you shall afflict your souls; and you shall offer an offering made by fire to the LORD. 28 You shall do no manner of work in that same day; for it is Yom Kippura day of atonement, to make atonement for you before the LORD your God. 29 For whatever soul it be who shall not be afflicted in that same day; he shall be cut off from his people. 30 Whatever soul it be who does any manner of work in that same day, that soul will I destroy from among his people. 31 You shall do no manner of work: it is a statute forever throughout your generations in all your dwellings. 32 It shall be to you a Shabbat of solemn rest, and you shall afflict your souls: in the ninth day of the month at even, from even to even, shall you keep your Shabbat.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

Ye shall do no manner of work,.... Which is repeated, that it might be observed, and to show how strictly God required this day should be kept, and how careful men should be of breaking the command in this respect, and how much he should resent it if they did:

[it shall be] a statute for ever, throughout your generations, in all your dwellings; unto the coming of the Messiah, who, by the atoning sacrifice of himself, would answer to this law, and put an end to it.
