Contextual Overview

8Jehoiachin [is] a son of eighteen years in his reigning, and he has reigned three months in Jerusalem, and the name of his mother [is] Nehushta daughter of Elnathan of Jerusalem, 9and he does evil in the eyes of YHWH, according to all that his fathers did. 10At that time servants of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon have come up to Jerusalem, and the city goes into siege, 11and Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon comes against the city, and his servants are laying siege to it, 12and Jehoiachin king of Judah goes out to the king of Babylon, he, and his mother, and his servants, and his chiefs, and his eunuchs, and the king of Babylon takes him in the eighth year of his reign, 13and brings out from there all the treasures of the house of YHWH, and the treasures of the house of the king, and cuts in pieces all the vessels of gold that Solomon king of Israel made in the temple of YHWH, as YHWH had spoken. 14And he has removed all Jerusalem, and all the chiefs, and all the mighty men of valor—ten thousand [is] the expulsion—and every craftsman and smith; none has been left except the poor of the people of the land. 15And he removes Jehoiachin to Babylon, and the mother of the king, and the wives of the king, and his eunuchs, and the mighty ones of the land—he has caused a removal to go from Jerusalem to Babylon, 16and all the men of valor, seven thousand, and the craftsmen and the smiths, one thousand, the whole [are] mighty men, warriors; and the king of Babylon brings them in a captivity to Babylon. 17And the king of Babylon causes his father's brother Mattaniah to reign in his stead, and turns his name to Zedekiah.

Bible Verse Review
  from Treasury of Scripure Knowledge

the king: 2 Chronicles 36:10, 2 Chronicles 36:11, Jeremiah 37:1, Jeremiah 52:1

his father's brother: He was son of Josiah, brother to Jehoiakim, and uncle of Jehoiachin. 1 Chronicles 3:15, 1 Chronicles 3:16, 2 Chronicles 36:10

changed: The change of name was to shew Nebuchadnezzar's supremacy, and that Zedekiah was only his vassal or viceroy. The custom of changing names, we are assured by travellers, still exists in the East. 2 Kings 23:34, 2 Chronicles 36:4

Reciprocal: 1 Chronicles 3:14 - Josiah Jeremiah 1:3 - unto the end Jeremiah 21:1 - when Ezekiel 17:5 - the seed Ezekiel 17:13 - hath taken Daniel 1:7 - gave names

Gill's Notes on the Bible

And the king of Babylon made Mattaniah his father's brother king in his stead,.... The third son of Josiah, 1 Chronicles 3:15

and changed his name to Zedekiah; for the same reason the king of Egypt changed the name of Eliakim, 2 Kings 23:34 to signify his subjection to him; though some think it was to put him in mind of the justice of God, as the name signifies, that would overtake him, should he be treacherous to him, and rebel against him; so the Jewish Midrash.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

Mattaniah, son of Josiah and brother of Jehoahaz, but thirteen years his junior, adopted a name significant of the blessings promised by Jeremiah to the reign of a king whose name should be “Yahweh, our righteousness” Jeremiah 23:5-8.

Clarke's Notes on the Bible

Verse 2 Kings 24:17. Made Mattaniah his father's brother king in his stead — He was the son of Josiah, and brother to Jehoiakim.

Changed his name to Zedekiah.2 Kings 23:34.
