Contextual Overview

32Two other outlaws were being led out with Jesus to be killed. 33When they got to Skull Hill, they nailed Jesus to a cross and lifted him up for all to see. The outlaws were also put on crosses—one on the left and one on Jesus's right. 34Jesus said, "Dad, don't hold this against them. They have no idea what they are truly doing." Below him, the Roman soldiers were betting on his clothes by rolling dice. 35As the crowds watched, some of the religious leaders laughed and yelled, "If he is God's Son, if he is God's Top Hand, if he can save others, let's see him get himself off that cross!" 36The soldiers also made fun of him by offering him some sour wine like they were his servants and he was a king. 37Many called out to Jesus saying, "If you are the King of the Jews, prove it by saving yourself!" 38Someone had placed a handwritten plaque above Jesus's head that said, "King of the Jews." 39One of the outlaws next to him said, "Show 'em all who is Boss. Save yourself and take us with you." 40But the other outlaw shushed him and said, "Don't you see? We're fixing to meet our Maker, and 41we deserve what we're gettin'. But this man," he shook his head sadly as he looked at Jesus, "but this man has done nothing.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

And saying, if thou be the King of the Jews,.... Or their Messiah, who was spoken of as a divine person; for otherwise he might have been their king, and not have been able to have done what is proposed:

save thyself: or deliver thyself from the cross.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

See the notes at Matthew 27:41-44.

Luke 23:38

In letters of Greek ... - See the notes at Matthew 27:37.

Luke 23:39

One of the malefactors - Matthew Matthew 27:44 says “the thieves - cast the same in his teeth.” See the apparent contradiction in these statements reconciled in the notes at that place.

If thou be Christ - If thou art the Messiah; if thou art what thou dost pretend to be. This is a taunt or reproach of the same kind as that of the priests in Luke 23:35.

Save thyself and us - Save our lives. Deliver us from the cross. This man did not seek for salvation truly; he asked not to be delivered from his sins; if he had, Jesus would also have heard him. Men often, in sickness and affliction, call upon God. They are earnest in prayer. They ask of God to save them, but it is only to save them from “temporal” death. It is not to be saved from their sins, and the consequence is, that when God “does” raise them up, they forget their promises, and live as they did before, as this robber “would” have done if Jesus had heard his prayer and delivered him from the cross.
