¹Then Jesus gathered everyone who wanted to learn around him. He taught them with stories they could understand and relate to, "A man started a ranch and strung all the wire and set every post. He even built a big nice entrance with a gate. After that, he leased the ranch on shares to some cowboys who wanted to get started in the business. The rancher moved away to another part of the country, but at the time of shipping calves, ²he sent one of his cowboys back to get the share of his calves for the lease. ³But the cowboys on the ranch grabbed the cowboy and beat the crap out of him and sent him back without a single calf. ⁴"The rancher sent another hand over there to get his share of the calves and they beat that fellow also and sent him back empty-handed. ⁵The next cowboy the rancher sent was even killed. Still, the rancher sent hand after hand to get what was owed and right. They beat or killed every single one. ⁶"Finally, the rancher was all out of hands and the only one left to send was his only son—the son he loved more than anything else. The rancher finally sent him, thinking, 'Surely they will respect my son.' ⁷ "But the evil cowboys saw the son coming and said to one another, 'Look, the rancher sends his own son. If we kill him, then the rancher will have no one to leave his ranch to and we will have the boy's inheritance.' ⁸So they ambushed the rancher's grown son, killed him, and then left his body right outside the front gate." ⁹Jesus continued the story, "So what do y'all think the rancher will do? He will come back himself and kill those no-account rustlers and give the ranch to other cowboys who will be thankful for the opportunity to ride for him. ¹⁰Have you not read God's words that say, 'The calf the cowboys culled has now become the sire bull.

Verse Mark 12:4. At him they cast stones and wounded him in the head — Or rather, as most learned men agree, they made short work of it, εκεφαλαιωσαν. We have followed the Vulgate, illum in capite vulneraverunt, in translating the original, wounded him in the head, in which signification, I believe, the word is found in no Greek writer. ανακεφαλαιοομαι signifies to sum up, to comprise, and is used in this sense by St. Paul, Romans 13:9. From the parable we learn that these people were determined to hear no reason, to do no justice, and to keep the possession and the produce by violence; therefore they fulfilled their purpose in the fullest and speediest manner, which seems to be what the evangelist intended to express by the word in question. Mr. Wakefield translates, They speedily sent him away; others think the meaning is, They shaved their heads and made them look ridiculously; this is much to the same purpose, but I prefer, They made short work of it. Dr. Lightfoot, De Dieu, and others, agree in the sense given above; and this will appear the more probable, if the word λιθοβολησαντες, they cast stones, be omitted, as it is by BDL, the Coptic, Vulgate, and all the Itala.
