¹ These are the deuisions of the sonnes of Aaro. The sonnes of Aaron: Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. ² Nadab also and Abihu dyed before their father, & had no children: But Eleazar, & Ithamar executed the priestes office. ³ And Dauid ordred them on this maner: Zadoc of the sonnes of Eleazar, and Ahimelec of the sonnes of Ithamar [were] according to their offices in their ministration. ⁴ And there were mo auncient men founde among the sonnes of Eleazar, then the sonnes of Ithamar. And thus were they ordred together: Among the sonnes of Eleazar there were sixteene rulers according to the houshold of their fathers, and eyght among the sonnes of Ithamar according to the housholde of their fathers. ⁵ And thus were they put in order by lot the one sort from the other: and so were there rulers in the sanctuarie and lordes before God, aswell of the sonnes of Eleazer, as of the sonnes of Ithamar. ⁶ And Semeia the sonne of Nathanael the scribe, of the kinred of the Leuites, wrote them before the king & the lordes, & before Zadoc the priest and Ahimelec the sonne of Abiathar, and before the auncient fathers of the priestes and Leuites, one principall housholde being reserued for Eleazar, and one for Ithamar. ⁷ And the first lot fell to Iehoiarib: and the seconde to Iedaia, ⁸ The third to Harim, and the fourth to Sehorim, ⁹ The fyft to Melchia, and the sixth to Miiamin, ¹⁰ The seuenth to Hakos, and the eyght to Abia,

And David distributed them,.... The posterities of Eleazar and Ithamar into certain classes or courses:

both Zadok of the sons of Eleazar, and Ahimelech of the sons of Ithamar; these were the two principal men of the respective families, the one was high priest, and the other "sagan" or deputy; or they both officiated as high priests alternately, until the one was removed in Solomon's time, and the other established alone. And now their brethren the priests, who were under each of these, are the persons David divided into classes:

according to their offices in their service: to perform their office as priests in the service of the temple in their turns.

Zadok and Ahimelech (rather Abiathar, see 1 Chronicles 24:6) assisted David in drawing up the priestly courses, as the “captains of the host” assisted him in making the divisions of the singers 1 Chronicles 25:1.
