Contextual Overview

24 And Saul sayde vnto Samuel, I haue sinned: For I haue gone farther then the saying of the Lorde and thy wordes, because I feared the people, and obeyed their voyce. 25 Now therfore I pray thee take away my sinne, and turne agayne with me, that I may worship the Lorde. 26 And Samuel sayde vnto Saul, I wyll not returne with thee: For thou hast cast away the worde of the Lorde, and the Lord hath cast away thee, that thou shalt not be kyng ouer Israel. 27 And as Samuel turned hym selfe to go away, he caught the lappe of his coate, and it rent. 28 And Samuel sayde vnto hym: The Lorde hath rent the kyngdome of Israel from thee this day, and hath geuen it to a neighbour of thine that is better then thou. 29 The strength of Israel wyl not beguyle, nor repent: for he is not a man that shoulde repent. 30 He sayde, I haue sinned: But nowe honour me before the elders of my people and before Israel, and turne againe with me, that I may worship the Lord thy God. 31 And so Samuel turned againe, and folowed Saul: and Saul worshipped the Lorde.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

And Samuel said unto Saul, I will not return with thee,.... Not being satisfied with his repentance and confession, he still extenuating his sin, and laying the blame of it on the people. This he said by way of resentment, and as expressing his indignation at him, though he afterwards did return with him on a change of his mind; which a good man may be allowed to make, without any imputation of falsehood or a lie unto him:

for thou hast rejected the word of the Lord, and the Lord hath rejected thee from being king over Israel; which is repeated from 1 Samuel 15:23 for the confirmation of it, and to let Saul know that his pretended confession and repentance had made no alteration in the decree and sentence of God respecting the kingdom.

Clarke's Notes on the Bible

Verse 1 Samuel 15:26. I will not return with thee — I cannot acknowledge thee as king, seeing the Lord hath rejected thee.
