Contextual Overview

10 But I reioyce in the Lorde greatly, that nowe at the last you are reuiued againe to care for me, in ye wherin ye were also carefull, but ye lacked oportunitie. 11 I speake not because of necessitie. For I haue learned, in whatsoeuer estate I am, therwith to be content. 12 I knowe howe to be lowe, and I knowe howe to exceade. Euery where & in all thynges I am instructed, both to be ful, and to be hungry, both to haue plentie, and to suffer neede. 13 I can do all thynges through Christe, which strengtheneth me. 14 Notwithstandyng, ye haue well done yt ye dyd communicate to my afflictions. 15 Ye Philippians knowe also, that in the begynnyng of the Gospell, when I departed fro Macedonia, no Church communicated to me, as concernyng geuyng and receauyng, but ye only. 16 For euen in Thessalonica, ye sent once, & afterward agayne vnto my necessitie. 17 Not that I desire a gyft, but I desire fruite aboundyng to your accompt. 18 But I haue receaued al, & haue plentie. I was euen fylled after that I had receaued of Epaphroditus the thynges [which were sent] from you, an odoure of a sweete smel, a sacrifice acceptable, plesaunt to God. 19 My God shall supplie all your neede, through his riches in glorie, in Christe Iesus.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

For even in Thessalonica,.... When the apostle was there; for from Philippi he went to Thessalonica; see Acts 17:1;

ye sent once and again unto my necessity; for his use and service, to support him while he was at that place, and relieve and assist him in his necessities; for the people at Thessalonica were either not able to communicate, or were not of a beneficent disposition, or the apostle did not care to be chargeable to them; and they seem many of them to have been idle and lazy, and therefore he wrought among them with his own hands to set them an example; and the Philippians hearing and knowing that this was the case, sent frequently, while he was here, some of the brethren with gifts unto him.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

For even in Thessalonica; - see the notes, Acts 17:1. Paul remained there long enough to establish a flourishing church. He met, indeed, with much opposition and persecution there; and, hence, it was necessary that his wants should be supplied by others.

Clarke's Notes on the Bible

Verse 16. For even in Thessalonica — While labouring to plant the Church there, he was supported partly by working with his hands, 1 Thessalonians 2:9; 2 Thessalonians 3:7-9; and partly by the contributions sent him from Philippi. Even the Thessalonians had contributed little to his maintenance: this is not spoken to their credit.
