Verses 1-8

  1. Intro:
    1. Prayer: Lord, we lay out the welcome mat for You, in front of our hearts, for 2014. You are giving us a new set of 12 months, should you tarry.
    2. I like new years. To me it’s like that feeling you get when you get to clean off your work desk...or clean your garage.
      1. We get to seal up 2013 with a bow.
      2. Maybe it was a great year for you. Or, maybe it was a year to forget or put behind. Maybe it was a year of failures. Regrets. Even poor choices relationally, or bad investments financially, or you felt it was unsatisfactory spiritually.
      3. 2014 clean slate :) New beginning. New year.
      4. As we look into 2014 in sports...we don’t know whether it is going to be too cold for The Superbowl this year in Jersey. Or, too warm for the winter Olympics in Sochi. The Boston Marathon will be the 2nd largest in history w/36,000. Brazil promises to be ready for the World Cup, but they’re asking can its infrastructure handle all the tourists?
      5. But what about our spiritual life in 2014...will it be status quo Christianity? Or, off the charts cool things partnering with God?
    3. Well, we just celebrated Jesus’ birth, which we get to do each year.
      1. But our topic this morning is one to be celebrated every day, cuz it is always Easter.
        1. Easter morning was the Father’s audible Amen to all the claims of Jesus Christ.” George Matheson
        2. Christ has died, Christ has risen, & Christ is coming again...maybe in 2014? :)
    4. Let’s start by watching a clip from, The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe. King Aslan the Lion(rep/Jesus) has been brutally killed by the White Witch, leaving his body on the stone table. Lucy & Susan are dejectedly mourning the loss of the great king. Turning to walk away, the ground shakes & they hear the sound of stone cracking. The girls turn & see Aslan's body is gone.
      1. Susan said, "But we saw the knife..."? But her question was cut short by Aslan's response. He explains the Evil Witch did not understand the true meaning of sacrifice. Aslan proclaims, "When a willing victim who has committed no treachery is killed in a traitor's stead, the stone table will crack and even death itself will turn backwards."
      2. Our Title this morning - Death Turned Backwards
    5. This is the story of Transformation. It’s a story of Victory. New beginnings. Fresh starts. Refreshed purpose. An Invigorated life. Revived faith. Restored hope.
    6. God has a Word for each character in the Res story…& a Word for each of us this morning.
    7. Outline: A Word of Victory for the Ladies. A Word of Encouragement for Peter. A Word of Direction for the Disciples. And, A Word of ________ for you.
  2. A WORD OF VICTORY FOR THE LADIES
    1. (4) When they looked up, they saw that the stone had been rolled away - for it was very large.
    2. 1st, a couple words about the resurrection.
      1. The religious leaders jeered, Let the Christ, the King of Israel, descend now from the cross, that we may see and believe.
        1. Well, Jesus had one better for them...How about instead of down from the cross...I come up from the grave?!!!
      2. All 4 gospel accounts end with the resurrection story. Yet some get worried about the different accounts.
        1. Well, they are 4 different individuals, giving 4 different perspectives.
        2. If the police call in 4 eyewitnesses, & they all give the exact-same-story, it is usually not trustworthy because most likely they have collaborated.
    3. (1) The same Love that brought these ladies to the cross brought them to the tomb.
      1. They must not have expected His Resurrection. For they brought spices to complete the anointing Joseph & Nicodemus had begun.
    4. Brought spices – αρωµα(aroma) perfumed oils.
      1. Since embalming wasn’t a Jewish custom, these aromatic perfumes were poured over the body to counteract the stench of decay.
      2. But this was also done as an expression of loving devotion (as we bring flowers to the grave today)
    5. (3,4) What surprises these ladies faced:
      1. The stone was already rolled away.
        1. The heart pound. Did someone steal it? Is someone defiling it? Would they be denied this last act of devotion?
        2. Once the large stone was slotted in the prepared groove, it was far harder to remove.
        3. Of course this not to let Jesus out, but to let them in.
        4. Great Lesson: It is interesting that when we are worried about how something is going to work out, i.e. vs.3 who will roll away the stone?…we just need to Look up (4)
          1. On reaching the place of the resurrection...they found their difficulty gone!
          2. The stoned rolled away by an unseen hand.
          3. Our you facing any terrible difficulties?

    1. (7) Tell the disciples and Peter.
    2. There is restoration. There is forgiveness. There is amnesty/pardon.
      1. In spite of Peter denying our Lord, Jesus never denied him.
        1. See, He had plans for Peter. And when you have returned to Me Peter strengthen your brethren.
        2. And backslidden brethren, He has plans for you. For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the LORD, thoughts of peace & not of evil, to give you a future & a hope.
      2. Peter loved Jesus, & even if his loved failed, it rose again.
  4. A WORD OF DIRECTION FOR THE DISCIPLES
    1. (7) Go, tell His disciples...that He is going before you into Galilee; there you will see Him.
      1. Or, as Mt.28:6,7 writes it Come and See. Go and Tell.
    2. He’s going before you –
      1. Where do you need Him to go before you? Where would you like to be assured that He’ll be there waiting. Where do you need to know He’s been there first?
    3. According to The Proceedings of the U.S. Naval Institute: The USS Astoria (CA-34) was the first U.S. cruiser to engage the Japanese during the Battle of Savo Island, a night action fought 8-9 August 1942. Although she scored two hits on the Imperial flagship Chokai, the Astoria was badly damaged and sank shortly after noon, 9 August.

About 0200 hours a young midwesterner, Signalman 3rd Class Elgin Staples, was swept overboard by the blast when the Astoria’s number one eight-inch gun turret exploded. Wounded in both legs by shrapnel and in semi-shock, he was kept afloat by a narrow lifebelt that he managed to activate with a simple trigger mechanism.

At around 0600 hours, Staples was rescued by a passing destroyer and returned to the Astoria, whose captain was attempting to save the cruiser by beaching her. The effort failed, and Staples, still wearing the same lifebelt, found himself back in the water. It was lunchtime. Picked up again, this time by the USS President Jackson (AP-37), he was one of 500 survivors ofthe battle who were evacuated to Noumea.

On board the transport Staples, for the first time, closely examined the lifebelt that had served him so well. It had been manufactured by Firestone Tire and Rubber Company of Akron, Ohio, and bore a registration number.

Given home leave, Staples told his story and asked his mother, who worked for Firestone, about the purpose of the number on the belt. She replied that the company insisted on personal responsibility for the war effort, and that the number was unique and assigned to only one inspector. Staples remembered everything about the lifebelt, and quoted the number.

It was his mother’s personal code and affixed to every item she was responsible for approving. (Adapted from Kent Hughes, Hebrews, pg.168,169. Commander Eric J. Berryman,“Strange Things Happen at Sea”,Proceedings, U.S. Naval Institute, June 1989, Vol. 115/6/1036, p. 48.)
      1. 71 ago, a mother’s unheralded diligence in an anonymous wartime job made sure her soon-to-be shipwrecked son’s hope of survival.
      2. But how much greater are the stakes in eternal matters, and how much greater is the challenge to diligence in eternal matters. “We desire/long for each one of you,” says the writer in verse 11, “to show this same diligence to the very end, in order to make your hope sure.”
    4. Heb.6:19,20 Forerunner – This spoke of the men or troops which were sent to explore before the advance of an army.

        2. Faith = This is when He anchors to a place out of our sight. [Picture up over the rock where you can’t see]
          1. Jesus has gone 1st through the veil, into His Fathers presence, & though we don’t see it yet, we’re climbing close behind.
        3. Patience – you can’t be in a hurry when you’re climbing. Every step & grip better be calculated.

      1. Belief is always the common denominator in these verses.
        1. i.e. repent & believe; confess w/mouth & believe w/heart; hear His Word & believe; see the Son & believe.
      2. To Believe…is to trust, to depend, to rely upon Christ Jesus.
      3. To be Baptized…is to submit to the ordinance which our Lord fulfilled in the Jordan; to which the 3000 converted ones submitted to at Pentecost; & to which the jailer yielded obedience the very night of his conversion.
        1. Baptism is an outward sign that sets forth our death, burial, & resurrection w/Jesus…& is not to be neglected.
        2. Baptism doesn’t confer salvation; it confirms it.
      4. So, to Go & Preach The Gospel Must Flow, Some Must Go & All Must Sow.
    2. [1] THE GOSPEL MUST FLOW

        1. When they returned, did they rebuke them for not going?
      2. Not all are called to be sent, but all are called to be apart of the discipling of the nations [can you do that here…yes]
      3. But I’m not a pastor - In our day & age many places you can’t go in & do a church plant or be a pastor. There are so many vocations where you can reach millions of lost. Teaching English, construction, computers, helping w/micro-finance, loans, providing jobs w/business overseas.

    3. He did not share with us the Great Consideration, nor the Great Contemplation. He gave us The Great Commandment & The Great Commission.
    4. God has a world-sized role for every Christian in His global purpose. Perspectives
    5. MISSION - States our Aim; our fundamental purpose of why we exist; what we’re supposed to be doing.
      1. To love God completely - To love people authentically - To make disciples globally
        1. To unpack this we’ll into our Motto.
    6. MOTTO - The Motto takes our Mission & breaks it down to something that could be placed on a Tee-shirt. A simplified rule to live by.
      1. To live the Great Commandment. Mrk 12:28-34
      2. To fulfill the Great Commission. Mt. 28:18-20
    7. [1] TO LIVE THE GREAT COMMANDMENT (read Mrk 12:29-31)
    8. The first of all the commandments is: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ This is the first commandment. And the second, like it, is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.

      1. The rabbis divided the 613 precepts of the law(248 commands, 365 prohib) into weighty/light
      2. Since they knew no one could keep all of them, they broke them up into 2 categories: Weighty/heavy (more Imp. laws) & Light (less imp. laws)
        1. The problem was if you broke 1, whether heavy & or light, you were guilty before God. For whoever shall keep the whole law, & yet stumble in 1 point, he is guilty of all James 2:10
    10. Jesus’ reply was the Shema (Deut.6:4,5) which every pious Pharisee repeated twice a day.
      1. It 1st pointed to the Unity of Deity, The Lord our God is one Lord; and then to man’s chief obligation, to love Him with all our heart, soul, mind, & strength. [w/all one’s being]
        1. Love God w/Everything [Heart, soul, mind, strength, possessions, service, our whole life, family, hobbies, time, money, relationships, tax returns, etc.]
          1. To love Him isn’t to have good feelings about Him; True love involves the will, as well as the heart.
        2. Everything devoted to loving God. It does not take much of a man to be a believer, but it takes all there is of him. Kent Hughes, pg.115
    11. Jesus then added a 2nd one, You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
      1. Because love for God can’t be divorced from love for one’s neighbor; He puts Lev. 19:18 on the same level as the Shema.
      2. Example: Do you like sourdough bread dipped in olive oil & balsamic vinegar?
        1. Have you ever tried dipping in just one? (God says the same)
        2. Don’t try just dipping into just loving Me w/o loving my people; or just loving your fellow man w/o loving Me. (make sure that mix is rt)
        3. John said, If someone says, "I love God," and hates his brother, he is a liar. 1 Jn.4:20,21
      3. A total love for God & a sensitive love for others is the essence of a life that pleases God - Love God Completely; Love people authentically.
        1. Now let’s look at how/why we Make disciples globally.
    12. [2] TO FULFILL THE GREAT COMMISSION (Mt. 28:18-20)
    13. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.
    14. God has never changed – He’s always been the Global God, the Missionary God.
      1. And has always desired the nations.
    15. How it all ends: Rev.5:9,10 You are worthy to take the scroll, & to open its seals; For You were slain, & have redeemed us to God by Your blood Out of every tribe & tongue & people & nation, And have made us kings and priests to our God; & we shall reign on the earth.
      1. Worship song; Gospel song; Missionary song; Priestly song; Prophetic song.
    16. Throughout the bible, God displays His election towards Israel, W/His eye on the Nations.
    17. Wrap Up:
      1. To live the Great Commandment - To fulfill the Great Commission
        1. If you are a follower of JC it is not to GET the word out, but to simply LET the Word out.
      2. Love God w/everything. He isn’t looking for a part of you, He wants all of you.
      3. Be real with people, no one likes syrupy christians.
      4. Disciple w/your lives, here, there, & everywhere you go.
    18. Story: Fritz Kreisler the world-famous violinist, earned a fortune with his concerts and compositions, but he generously gave most of it away. So, when he discovered an exquisite violin on one of his trips, he wasn’t able to buy it. Later, having raised enough money to meet the asking price, he returned to the seller, hoping to purchase that beautiful instrument. But to his great dismay it had been sold to a collector.
      1. Kreisler made his way to the new owner’s home and offered to buy the violin. The collector said it had become his prized possession and he would not sell it. Keenly disappointed, Kreisler was about to leave when he had an idea. “Could I play the instrument once more before it is consigned to silence?” he asked.
      2. Permission was granted, and the great virtuoso filled the room with such heart-moving music that the collector’s emotions were deeply stirred. “I have no right to Slide#25b keep that to myself,” he exclaimed. “It’s yours, Mr. Kreisler. Take it into the world, and let people hear it.” Thats our commission!
    19. Prayer:
Lord, I have heart trouble [I’m preoccupied w/my own interests &have no room for compassion 4 others]
I have eye trouble [I don’t see the world w/Your eyes]

I have ear trouble [Lord you call, but often…I don’t listen]
