Ezekiel 29:14 — bring again, &c = turn the fortunes, &c. See note on Deuteronomy 30:3 , the captivity of Egypt or, the Egyptian captives. Note the discrimination shown in these prophecies. Some were never to be restored; others were to be resuscitated. Pathros = Upper, or Southern Egypt. habitation = nativity. base = low.
Ezekiel 30:5 — Libya . Lydia. Hebrew Phut . . . Led. Compare Ezekiel 27:10 . Genesis 10:6 . These were an African people. Compare Jeremiah 46:9 . Nahum 3:9 . mingled people = mixed multitude: i.e. the allies of Babylon. Compare Jeremiah 25:20 . Chub . Perhaps Caba, in Mauretania, or Cobe, in Ethiopia. men = sons.
Ezekiel 8:1 — the sixth year , &c. See table on p. 1105. fifth. Some codices read "first". the elders of Judah: i.e. of' the Jewish colony at Tel = Abib (Ezekiel 3:15 ). the hand. Figure of speech Anthropopatheia. App-6 . the Lord GOD . Hebrew Adonai Jehovah. See note on Ezekiel 2:4 .
Daniel 9:16 — holy. See note on Exodus 3:5 . because for our sins . . . fathers . Reference to Pentateuch (Exodus 20:5 ). App-92 . become a reproach . Compare Jeremiah 24:9 ; Jeremiah 29:18 ; Jeremiah 42:18 ; Jeremiah 44:8 , Jeremiah 44:12 .Ezekiel 5:14 , Ezekiel 5:15 ; Ezekiel 22:4 .
Hosea 10:2 — Their heart is divided. Compare 1 Kings 18:21 . 2Ki 17:32 , 2 Kings 17:33 , 2 Kings 17:41 . found faulty = held guilty. Referring back to Hosea 9:17 . he shall, &c. Reference to Pentateuch (Exodus 23:24 ; Exodus 34:13 .Deuteronomy 7:5 ; Deuteronomy 12:3 ).
Amos 3:12 — Thus saith the Lord. See note on Amos 1:3 . As = Just as. according as. taketh = rescueth, like a brand plucked from the burning. a piece = the tip. in a couch = [in the corner of] a couch: i.e. luxuriously. Compare Amos 6:1-4 . Ellipsis (of Repetition). App-6
Amos 7:10 — the priest. The idolatrous priest. Beth-el. Compare Amos 3:14 ; Amos 4:4 ; Amos 5:5 , Amos 5:6 . conspired = formed a conspiracy; the calves being connected with Israel's state policy (1 Kings 12:26-33 ). in the midst, &c. : i.e. openly. Compare Amos 7:8 . bear = endure.
Amos 9:4 — command the sword. Reference to Pentateuch (Leviticus 26:33 . Deu 26:25 ). App-92 . Compare Ezekiel 5:12 . I will set Mine eyes , &c. Reference to Pentateuch (Leviticus 17:10 ; Leviticus 20:5 ). App-92 . Compare Jeremiah 44:11 . evil = calamity. Hebrew. ra'a'. App-44 . Compare Amos 3:6 .
Jonah 1:10 — men. Hebrew, plural of 'enosh. App-14 . exceedingly = afraid. Figure of speech Potyptoton ( App-6 ) = feared a great fear. Why . . . ? They knew the fact of his flight, but not the reason, which is not revealed till Jonah 4:1-3 . This is not therefore "a later addition", as alleged.
Habakkuk 1:13 — Thou art, &c. Note the Fig, Synchoresis ( App-6 ). evil. Hebrew. ra'a'. App-44 . iniquity = perverseness, or wrong. Hebrew. 'amal. App-44 . Not the same word as in Habakkuk 1:3 , or Habakkuk 2:12 . the wicked = a lawless one. Hebrew. rasha'. App-44 . Looking forward to the Antichrist.
Zephaniah 3:1 — Woe = Alas for! See note on "For", Zephaniah 2:4 . her: i.e. Jerusalem. See the Structure, p. 1272. filthy = rebellious. polluted. Hebrew. ga'al, (1) to redeem: (2) to make or deem common or unclean. A Homonym, with two meanings. Not the same word as in Zephaniah 3:4 .
Haggai 1:14 — spirit. Hebrew. ruach. App-9 . Put by Figure of speech Metonymy (of Adjunct), App-6 , for the state of mind and feeling, &c. Compare 1 Chronicles 5:26 . 2Ch 21:16 ; 2 Chronicles 36:22 (= Ezra 1:1 ). Jeremiah 51:11 . they came. See Ezra 3:1 , &c.
Zechariah 4:6 — the LORD . Hebrew. Jehovah. App-4 . might = might [of man]. nor = and not. power = power [of flesh]. but by , &c. i.e. as in the lampstand the oil flowed silently, without help from man, Spirit. Hebrew. ruach App-9 . the LORD of hosts. See note on Zechariah 1:3 .
Malachi 1:2 — I have loved Reference to Pentateuch (Deuteronomy 7:8 ; Deuteronomy 10:15 ; Deuteronomy 33:3 ). saith = hath said. Quoted in Romans 9:13 , Esau Jacob's. Put by Figure of speech Metonymy (of Adjunct), App-6 , for their posterities. Quoted in Romans 9:13 , saith the LORD = [is] Jehovah's oracle.
Matthew 27:52 — graves = tombs. arose = were waked. All the texts read "were raised". Is this the resurrection referred to in Romans 1:3 ? See notes there. Greek. egersis = awaking rousing up, or arising. Occurs only here. Compare John 12:24 . They thus fulfilled the Lord's word in John 5:25 .
Matthew 9:15 — Can, &c. Figure of speech Paroemia . the children, &c. A Hebraism. Used in various connections. Compare Matthew 23:15 .Deuteronomy 13:13 . 1 Samuel 2:12 (margin); Matthew 20:31 . 2 Samuel 12:5 (margin) John 17:12 .Acts 3:25 . children = sons. Greek plural of huios. shall = will.
Mark 11:16 — And would not suffer, &c. This was not done at the former cleansing in Matthew 21:12-16 . vessel . Greek skeuos. See note on Mark 3:27 . Used of vessels in general for non-sacred purposes. through. Greek. dia App-104 .Mark 11:1 . As if through a street.
Luke 12:15 — Take heed = See. Greek. horao. App-133 . beware = keep yourselves from, covetousness. All the texts read "all covetousness". man's = to any one. life. Greek zoe. See App-170 . Not so with bios ( App-171 .) possesseth. Greek. huparcho. see Philippians 1:2 , Philippians 1:6 (being); Luke 3:20 ("is ").
Luke 6:44 — is known = gets to be known. Greek ginosko. App-132 . by. Greek. ek. App-104 . his = its. of = from. Greek. ek. App-104 . bramble bush. Greek. batos. Occurs outside Lake and Acts only in Mark 12:26 . It is the same word in Exodus 3:2-4 (Septuagint).
