2 Kings 16:3
he walked. Compare 2 Chronicles 28:2 .
son. See note on 2 Chronicles 28:3 .
to pass through the fire. The first king of Judah to do this. Followed in it by Manasseh (2 Kings 21:6 ; 2 Kings 23:10 ). Compare Jeremiah 7:31 .Ezekiel 20:26 , and Leviticus 18:21 .
heathen = nations.
children = sons.
2 Kings 18:1
third year of Hoshea. Hoshea began in the twelfth year of Ahaz. Therefore Hezekiah began in the fifteenth year of Ahaz. Ahaz reigned sixteen years, but was deposed by Shalmaneser (2 Kings 17:3 , 2 Kings 17:4 ), who set up Hezekiah. Hezekiah rebelled (2 Kings 18:7 ), which shows he was under Assyria till then. See App-50 .
2 Kings 8:1
whose son. Compare 2 Kings 4:35 .
famine = the famine, which had already begun. Probably the same as 2 Kings 4:38 . Occasion is not determined by the text, but, 2 Kings 8:3 takes up the history at the end of the seven years.
it shall also come = it is come.
seven years: i.e. "[to last] seven years".
1 Chronicles 15:1
the ark. See notes on 1 Chronicles 13:3 and Exodus 25:22 .
pitched for it a tent. Had the Tabernacle of Moses been brought to Jerusalem, difficulties would have arisen in building the Temple. David's Tabernacle was merely provisional. The provision will yet be repeated, before the erection of the future Temple. See Acts 15:16 .
1 Chronicles 21:22
the place. Hebrew. makom, as in Ruth 4:10 . Referring to the whole place, afterward the Temple area. Not Hebrew. goren, as in 2 Samuel 24:24 , which was merely the threshingfloor, as in Ruth 3:2 . Hence 600 shekels of gold for the former, but only 50 shekels of silver for the latter. Two distinct transactions.
2 Chronicles 17:6
lifted up = encouraged.
he took away. But "the people" failed in their part (2 Chronicles 20:33 ; 1 Kings 22:43 ). Jehoshaphat did his by commanding that they should be taken away; not, of course, doing this with his own hands. Compare 2 Chronicles 19:3 .
groves. Hebrew the 'Asherim . See notes on Exodus 34:13 , and App-42 .
2 Chronicles 35:1
Josiah. This passover kept in the eighteenth year of his reign (2 Kings 23:21-23 ).
kept a passover. One of the ten observances recorded. See note on Exodus 12:28 .
fourteenth day. In this respect it was unlike Hezekiah's. Compare 2 Chronicles 30:2 , 2Ch 30:3 ; 2 Kings 23:22 , 2 Kings 23:23 .
Ezra 1:5
the chief of the fathers: i.e. those named in the next chapter.
chief = heads.
judah and Benjamin. But the other tribes found representatives. Compare Ezra 2:59 , Ezra 2:70 , where the terms "of Israel" and "all Israel" are used. In 1 Chronicles 9:3 , Ephrairn and Manasseh are mentioned by name. See note on 1 Kings 12:17 .
Psalms 69:31
better. Praise is the truest sacrifice.
an ox. See note on "song" (Psalms 69:30 ).
horns. Showing full age; not under three years (Genesis 15:9 ).
and. So some codices, with two early printed editions, Septuagint, Syriac, and Vulgate; but not in current printed Hebrew text.
hoofs = divided hoof, showing it to be ceremonially clean (Leviticus 11:3 ).
Psalms 89:2
I have said. Some codices, with Septuagint and Vulgate, read "Thou hast said". Compare Psalms 89:19 . The words of Ethan, reminding Jehovah of His covenant with David.
Mercy = Lovingkindness, or grace. Note "Mercy" (Psalms 89:2 ); "covenant" (Psalms 89:3 ); "seed" (Psalms 89:4 ); repeated below (verses: Psalms 89:19-32 and verses: Psalms 89:33-37 ).
Deuteronomy 11:14
first rain = "early rain". Falling middle of October to January, preparing ground for seeds. First occurrence of these rains.
latter rain. Falling in March and April, bringing on the harvest. Compare Leviticus 26:3 , Leviticus 26:4 .Joel 2:23 .Jeremiah 5:24 .Zechariah 10:1 .James 5:7 .
wine. Hebrew. tirosh, new wine. See App-27 .
Deuteronomy 2:5
because, &c . Compare Genesis 32:3 ; Genesis 33:6-8 ; Genesis 36:8 . Joshua 24:4 .
a possession. Hebrew. yarash (because given). Also in verses: Deuteronomy 2:9 , Deuteronomy 2:12 , Deuteronomy 2:19 , Deuteronomy 2:20 , &c.; in Deut, not 'ahaz (because seized), as in other books; though 'ahaz is used in Ch. Deuteronomy 32:49 .
Deuteronomy 28:8
storehouses = barns. Hebrew. 'aSamaritan Pentateuch Occurs only here and Proverbs 3:10 .
settest thine hand = lettest thine hand go forth. Put by Figure of speech Metonymy (of Cause) for all that is wrought by it. App-6 .
hand. Some codices, with three early printed editions, Samaritan Pentateuch, The Targum of Jonathan ben Uzziel Vulgate, read "hands".
Deuteronomy 31:3
the LORD = Jehovah. Note the Figure of speech Epanadiplosis ( App-6 ) in this verse, which in the Hebrew text begins and ends with "Jehovah".

as = according as. Compare the references to past statements: Deuteronomy 2:9 ; Deuteronomy 3:28 . Exodus 23:20 , Exodus 23:23 ; Exodus 33:2 .Numbers 27:15-23 .
Deuteronomy 33:6

live, and not die. Figure of speech Pleonasm ( App-6 ) for emphasis, reversing Genesis 49:3 , Genesis 49:4 .
let not. The word "not" is rightly repeated from preceding clause, to supply the Figure of speech Ellipsis ( App-6 ).
