1 Chronicles 10:13 — for. In this book the reason; in 1 Samuel only the event. See App-56 . transgression = disobedience, shown in his faithlessness or defection. Hebrew. ma'al. App-44 . Compare 1 Samuel 13:13 , 1 Samuel 13:14 ; 1 Samuel 15:1-9 ; 1 Samuel 28:7 . the LORD. Hebrew. Jehovah. App-4 . Note it is not Elohim (God). familiar spirit. See note on Leviticus 19:31 . to enquire = to seek and consult. Hebrew. darash, to seek earnestly. Saul sought thus with the medium, but not with Jehovah.
1 Chronicles 8:13 — Beriah. See notes on 1 Chronicles 7:23 , 1 Chronicles 7:30 . Aijalon. In Joshua 19:42 , it was in Dan. In Joshua 21:24 it was a Levitical city. In 2 Chronicles 28:18 it was occupied by Philistines, under Ahaz. But here occupied by Benjamites, because (1) of Dan's idolatry (see note on Genesis 49:17 ), and (2) of different distribution after the exile. drove away. A reprisal later than 1 Chronicles 7:21 . 1 Chronicles 8:33 — Ner begat Kish. There are three genealogies of the house of Saul. We place the facts, (1) that persons often had two names (1 Chronicles 8:34 .Judges 6:32 , &c), and (2) that the same name recurs in the same family, against the assumption that the opposite is the case. It is this assumption which creates the difficulties in "reconciling" 1 Samuel 9:1 ; 1 Samuel 14:51 ; and 1 Chronicles 9:38 . Esh-baal. Another name for Ish-bosheth (2 Samuel 2:8 ).
Proverbs 2:6 — giveth. The cry of Proverbs 2:3 implies a Giver. Illustrations: Joseph (Genesis 41:38 , Genesis 41:39 ); Moses (Exodus 4:12 ); Solomon (1 Kings 3:12 ; 1 Kings 4:29 ); Daniel (Proverbs 1:17 ; Pro 2:23 ); Stephen (Acts 6:5 , Acts 6:10 ); Lydia (Acts 16:14 ); Paul's prayer (Ephesians 1:17 . Colossians 1:9 ); John (1 John 5:20 ). Out of His mouth. A phrase common in the prophets, but only here in Proverbs. cometh. Supply Ellipsis from preceding clause "He giveth".
Proverbs 27:1 — Boast not, &c. Compare James 4:13-16 . thyself . . . thou. Second person. thou knowest not. Illustrations: Jonathan (1 Samuel 23:17 . Ecclesiastes 10:7 — horses. No evidence of a late origin of this book, for we read of them in 1 Kings 4:26 , 1Ki 4:28 ; 1 Kings 10:26 , 1 Kings 10:28 ; 1Ki 22:4 . 2 Kings 9:33 ; 2 Kings 14:20 . If not in common use, it was because of the Law (Deuteronomy 17:16 ); and because of Solomon's disobedience (1 Kings 10:28 . 2Ch 1:16 , 2 Chronicles 1:17 ; 2 Chronicles 9:28 ). upon the earth. Luke 1:32 — He shall be great , &c. Marks the break in the Dispensations, verses: Luke 1:32 , Luke 1:33 being yet future. the Highest = the Most High. Greek hupsiatos. Occurs seven times in Luke (Luke 1:32 , Luke 1:35 , Luke 1:76 ; Luke 2:14 (plural); Luke 6:35 ; Luke 8:28 ; Luke 19:38 (plural); and twice in Acts (Luke 7:48 ; Luke 16:17 ).
