Vine's Expository Dictionary of NT Words
"a side" (cp. Eng., "pleurisy"), is used of the "side" of Christ, into which the spear was thrust, John 19:34; 20:20,25,27 (some mss. have it in Matthew 27:49; see RV marg.); elsewhere, in Acts 12:7 .
an adverb, signifying "beyond, on the other side," is used (a) as a preposition and translated " on the other side of," e.g., in Mark 5:1; Luke 8:22; John 6:1 , RV; 6:22,25; (b) as a noun with the article, e.g., Matthew 8:18,28; 14:22; 16:5 . See BEYOND , No. 2.Notes: (1) In Luke 9:47 , the preposition para, "by the side of," with the dative case of the pronoun heautou, is rendered "by His side," RV (AV, "by Him").
