the hill of Ares, at Athens, Ἀρήϊος π. Hdt. 8.52, cf. A. Eu. 685, 690, etc.; ἡ βουλὴ ἡ ἐξ Ἀρείου πάγου IG 1.38a (prob.), 2.476.59, al., D. 18.133, cf. Lys. 26.12, Arist. Ath. 4.4; ἡ ἐν Ἀ. πάγῳ βουλή D. 20.157, Aeschin. 1.81, Arist. Ath. 59.6. — The compd. Ἀρειόπᾰγος only in a late Att. Inscr., IG 3.1005; but we find the noun Ἀρεοπᾰγίτης (Ἀρευ - ib.2.839.7) [ ῑ], ου, ὁ, Areopagite, Aeschin. 1.81, IG 3.746, cf. 635, Arist. Ath. 3.6, etc.: prov., Ἀρεοπαγίτου σιωπηλότερος 'as silent as the grave', Them. Or. 21.263a; στεγανώτερος Alciphr. 1.13: — Adj. Ἀρεοπᾰγῖτις, βουλή Arist. Ath. 41.2, Alciphr. 2.3; Ἀρεοπᾰγῑτικός, ή, όν, Isoc. 7 tit., Str. 6.1.8.
Ἄρειος (Tdf. Ἀριος) Πάγος, Πάγου, ὁ, Areopagus (a rocky height in the city of Athens not far from the Acropolis toward the west; πάγος a hill, Ἄρειος belonging to (Ares) Mars, Mars' Hill; so called, because, as the story went, Mars, having slain Halirrhothius, son of Neptune, for the attempted violation of his daughter Alcippe, was tried for the murder here before the twelve gods as judges; Pausan. Attic. 1, 28, 5), the place where the judges convened who, by appointment of Solon, had jurisdiction of capital offences (as willful murder, arson, poisoning, malicious wounding, and breach of the established religious usages). The court itself was called Areopagus from the place where it sat, alsoAreum judicium (Tacitus, ann. 2, 55), andcuria Martis (Juvenal, sat. 9, 101). To that hill the apostle Paul was led, not to defend himself before the judges, but that he might set forth his opinions on divine subjects to a greater multitude of people, flocking together there and eager to hear something new: Acts 17:19-22; cf. Ramsay has shown (Paul, p. 260 f., Recent Discovery, p. 102 ff.) that ὁ Ἄρειος Πάγος had come to denote in colloquial use (as in Acts 17:19; Acts 17:22) ";the Council of the Areopagus"; as distinguished from ";the Hill of Ares,"; where in early times the Council had met : see e.g. Cavvadias, Fouilles d’ Épidaure i. p. 68, No. 206 (A.D. 50–100) Ἄρειος Πάγος ἐν Ἐλευσῖνι λόγους ἐποιήσατο. For the full expression cf. Syll 593 (=.3 1008).3 (iii/A.D.) τῆς ἐξ Ἀρείου πάγου βουλῆς.
